hey guys!

So I got in my Natural Mech and the RSST RBA and I can tell I am going to be very happy with it. I have made a couple successful wick and coil setups but I am running into a common problem.

I build my wick and coil (using 28 gauge kanthal and 400 ss mesh) and do about 5 wraps to get at .8 to 1.1 ohm. Using my vamo to check the ohms so I am not sure if it is completely right. I use a 18350 battery discharged to around 3.7V and begin pulsing. I eventually get a nice solid glow on all the coils and I drip some juice on the wick and it seems good.

I then get a fully charged 18350 battery pop it in and it vapes right a way really well.. You can hear the popping and crackling and it is vaping awesome. Then after a couple of hits the popping and crackling stops and I notice several hot spots (coils glowing extremely bright and glowing the wick at the top in certain spots)

What could I be doing wrong? Is it something I can fix without dismantiling it or since I've gotten that many hotspots are they burned into the wick and I need to start over?

Sorry for the long post but your help is always appreciated!

When you hear popping and crackling, it's generally a sign that your coil is loose, thereby not making sufficient contact with the wick. When setting up, a loose coil may very well glow evenly, and look great. But if it pops and crackles when vaping, it's probably loose. A good way to tell is if you hold the unit close to your ear, and hit the power button, you should hear an even "hissssss". Not popping, sputtering, or crackling.

That's a good explanation. I've been wondering that for a while because mine always crackly, pop. Too loose, huh. I never would of come to that conclusion. I'm always worried I'm winding them too tight!
    Thanks

Ok. So I've gotten rid of the crackling by tightening up the coil and making sure its touching the wick but now I'm running into another problem.

After a few minutes of vaping all the coils will glow evenly and almost start to burn the wick and I get a bad smell and taste. I've tried adjusting the coils up and down but still they are getting really hot.

Would this be a wicking issue? The wick not pulling enough liquid?

Also if it helps I'm running 3 wraps 28 g kanthal. I've found that 3 is the easiest and I get about .09 ohms.

    Thanks!
