RSST.. Too Throat Hit and Not Enough Vapor

I have been messing around trying to build coils for the past couple of days. I finally got my RSST yesterday, and I used the last of my 400 mesh and I am using 28 guage Kanthal A1. The Rsst is on a Magneto.

When I fire the coil, it seems like I am getting good vapor, but when you hit it, you really don't get much vapor but an extreme taste and throat hit. The throat hit is nearly unbearable, it makes me cough, and I can inhale HUGE plumes of vapor and never cough from a vivi nova or protank.

I oxidized the coil before and after I rolled it. I am at .6ohms

What could be the problem here?

Are you aligning the air hole with the coil? Have you drilled out the air hole? I think it comes stock at 1mm, most people seem to have good luck with 1/16" (about 1.6mm).

I don't know if this is your first genesis-style atomizer, but you may have to work out some hotspots. That is my biggest struggle with my RSST (which is my first genny), fixing the hotspots and making them stay away. That and proper coil tension. I really need to get the right size drill bit so I can use the "petar k" method, which is supposed to make everything a lot easier.

Yes, this is my first genesis style atty. I may have some hotspots it seem the top of the coil is the one that turns orange. I tried to rewrap using the same mesh (super tightly rolled and barely fit through the rsst hole) and the top one turns orange first as well. Also, if I try to chain vape it, I can sometimes get a very harsh dry hit, and it stuns me, literally.

I will try to find a 1/16 drill bit tomorrow, but I have always put the airhole by the coil.

The coil should glow evenly when you hit the fire button when your tank is empty and the wick is dry. When the wick is wet the coil should not glow. Try to move the coils on your current build so that they're more evenly spaced. If you're still getting a poor vape, try moving your wick to bring it closer to the coil. If it doesn't work, reoxidize and recoil your wick. The key is to had an evenly spaced coil that's not too tight around the wick.

well if the coil fires fine then you will have to make sure you tilt it when taking a hit. fact of life for genis on mods most of the time.
because of the high wattage situation the coil is hotter then it would be on a regulated mod causing the wick to dry out faster then it can wick.

i can build a coil in my geni, put it on the provari, stand it on the table and fire the tank dry. that same wick recoiled for a mechanical requires the "geni tilt"

Hot spots and dry hits are vape killers.... they'll burn your throat, taste like crap and... well... very bad things.

First and foremost... check for the coil hot spots when the wick is dry. If the entire coil doesn't glow pretty much evenly and at the same time, the coil isn't firing correctly. The legs between the positive and negative posts should never glow...even if the coil is glowing, those legs should remain dark.

Now, when the coil is 'wet'... if it is throwing out plenty of vapor and you see anything glowing on that coil...that's a problem. Though, if the coil glows evenly when it is dry fired, you really shouldn't have this happen.

Now... I had some wicking issues with the last mesh I had... it would run out of juice quickly and when that happens, the coil heats up FAST and even before you see a glowing wrap, it'll taste nasty.

Lastly.... at .6 ohms... on a fresh battery, that is close to 30w.. no matter how well sorted the coil is, that's a HOT vape that will blow through a TON of juice. I know that at .8 ohms, I had issues with my wick keeping up with the coil... try adding a wrap or two more and see how that goes.

Yea the vape is extremely hot and it does burn my throat. The only way I can get it to hit right is if it sits in the juice for 10 mins and the first 2 hits are good if I tilt it. Everything else is harsh as hell. I have been blowing through juice too probably around 10ml today. All I have is space jam too . Tomorrow I will try tighter coils with more wraps.

Hell, when I use a regulated device, I dont vape over 7 watts.... ever

OK, I couldnt wait. I made mad e amuch tighter wrap this time. I wrapped it 6 times for a reading of .8 ohms on my Vamo. As of now, it seems to be a little better. I think what I need is a 1 or 1.1 ohm.

It dosent get as hot if I use a 18350 battery, but if I use a charged 18650 the wick cannot keep up, atleast it was like that with the .6 ohm.

Be careful with the 18350. With a .6 ohm coil, you are probably exceeding the safe current load on the cell... which can be very dangerous. Stick to the 650s.

If you are used to vaping at 7 watts, 20+ (29 on that .6) is going to be a little rough.

Try getting that coil to 1 ohm... on a fresh battery, that's around 16w, almost half of what you are hitting with that .6 coil. It'll run cooler, and pull less juice.

Your wick is not working as it should, tilt it at an angle.

This was my rsst with ss rope wick and 1 wrap of 500 ss mesh on exposed wick (video) This is probably the best wick for gennies, It wicks without even tilting it.

Tomorrow I wil try and add a couple more wraps on the mesh. I am at 6 or 7 wraps now and at .8 and the coils are pretty close. I will try and get them where they are almost touching tomorrow.

What gauge wire? 26? If you have 28g and 6 wraps gets to .8, I think maybe you are shorting through the wick. I have .9 with 4 wraps off 28.

I'll just say this as a friendly suggestion to a new RBA user. Unless you understand the ins and outs of Ohm's Law, the specs of your batteries, and the workings of a genesis style RBA, you really should avoid any kind so super low resistance/sub ohm build. If you aren't sure if what is going on, you can get yourself into trouble... not just building a faulty device that vapes like crap... that battery can suffer a catastrophic failure and explode.

Those batteries might look benign enough, but they can pack a huge punch...

There are a lot of posts here for new users, posts with a bounty of info on the RBA, the battery, how to build correctly, warnings and things to avoid and watch out for, etc. Read read read. don't learn the hard way.

I had to drill the air hole out on the RSST, I forget the size of the drill bit, but its just a little bigger than the original and its perfect...like you I had a hard draw and harsh vape with the factory air hole..

bigger airhole and i make sure my wick isnt rolled too tight. i can poke a large pin in the middle and i crimp the top.
