Rum Failure

Reporting our failures is just as important as reporting our successes.

I tried a rum mixture last night using Capt. Morgan as i thought the heavier flavor of a spiced rum would be would be better in a VG mixture.

All of the following trials were clean mixtures with each batch being started over for each trial.

Trial 1: 1ml VG, 4 drops rum. Result-No Detectable Flavor
Trial 2: 1ml VG, 8 drops rum. Result-Little Detectable Flavor
Trial 3: 1ml VG, 12 drops rum. Result-Little Detectable Flavor
Trial 4: 1ml VG, 16 drops rum. Result-Little Detectable Flavor

As of trial #4, I had almost .5ml rum to 1ml VG and I still was getting just a small hint of rum flavor in the vape. A very small hint to be exact.

Conclusion: Capt. Morgan is not a good flavoring for vape.

I may try again with some Black Seal I have around here somewhere. But so far I'm not convinced that rum is a good flavoring. There are rum extracts available, however, I would like to have the ability to change rum flavors depending on my preference of rum. That won't happen using a rum extract.

If anyone has had success using rum as a flavoring, please pass it along. I'd like to see where I'm going wrong, or if I'm tilting with windmills.

One could also heat it even more to boil most of the liquid off, leaving just the flavor. There's a chance of destroying the flavor though.

Using a dark rum should end up with more flavor - but the idea of vaping Ron Zacapa Centenario 23-year-old is a hell of a lot more interesting to me.

Given the price, I might try something more reasonable, like Diplomatico Exclusiva Reserva, or even better, Khukri. The Khukri has got tons of excellent flavor for $20 a bottle. Yep, that's the one I'll experiment with.

Let me know how that goes. I'll try the reduction method and report back. I don't have anywhere near the collection of rums that you have. But the process is the process and between the two of us, we should be able to figure that out.

BTW, I've done another round of trials using PG instead of VG with very much the same results. The PG rum mixture had a slightly higher detectable flavor, but still nothing to get excited about.

Wood's 100 Old Navy Rum is strong, 57%, and full of flavour but you were right in an earlier post, rum is too thin to mix and vape. If you've ever tasted neat food flavouring you'll know what I mean, it is extremely concentrated whereas bottled rum is in its diluted, ready-to-drink form.
Molasses gives Rum a lot of the flavour (along with a little caramel, vanilla and spices) and might be a possible additive to richen the rum, but there are different types of Molasses, Beet and Cane, and different levels of refinement, mild, dark and blackstrap. Then, if you choose Cane, there is a wide selection as well! You would be embarking on a long trail of trial and error with much cleaning of vaporisers!!!
I'm a big lover of dark rum and always had a stock of Wood's 100 when I ran a pub many moons ago; Wood's is my favourite and is matured for up to 3 years in dark oak barrels. Have a look at their website and learn about things like Black Tot Day, the sad day in 1970 when the Navy abolished the daily ration of a half pint of 160% proof Rum for each sailor every day!!
"Splice the main brace" was the sailors' favourite cry as that meant double rations. Other terms commonly used are 'Nelson's Blood' and 'Tapping The Admiral', the origins of which are somewhat grisly but funny. Following the English success at the Battle Of Trafalgar, which sadly witnessed the death of one of our greatest military leaders, Nelson's body was preserved by placing it in a barrel of rum. On the voyage home it is said that some crew members 'tapped' the bottom of the barrel and drank the rum, along with the 'essence of Nelson'! Thus the terms Nelson's Blood' and 'Tapping The Admiral'.

Good luck with your quest, but what a waste of Rum!!! It should be drunk dark and neat to savour the flavour and if you use a good quality you won't notice what you're vapin'!

Wood's 100 Old Navy Rum is strong..

Hummm...that tasty sounding stuff is not available in the US, nor is it available from my hook up in Spain where I normally get my liquor that i can't get in the US.

The best I can find is a UK supplier that can get it to me for about $30US a bottle. Add in the tax and shipping and its up to $49US a bottle. It may be cheaper for me to take a trip to London to try it there.

More failure tonight. In an attempt to find a good rum flavor to add to juice. I attmepted to make a rum reduction in hopes that it would intensify the flavor of the rum. After trying several reductions, the flavors on all of the samples batches were not increased. I didn't even try to make a vape juice out of this...it would have been a waste of time.

LOL. My initiation into a secret fraternal club involved a blind taste-testing of 10 rums. I managed to identify 6 of them - but had never tasted one of them so I was seriously guessing on it.

I also had to sweep my sponsor's bar off to make room for the rum. So I'm just handing down the rituals.

One of the best rums I have ever had was a 30 year old bottle of Appleton's. i got it at a visit to their distillery in Jamacia. It had been aged for 30 years in a burnt cherry cast. Wonderful stuff and smooth as mothers milk.

i'm so jealous of the stories of rum... my fav is bacardi anos? ugh can't recall it now... been too long since i bought a bottle... comes with a cork...

wish some of the better stuff was more easily gotten... i havnt been one to buy a 50 dollar bottle of anything -- ok a 50 dollar bottle of 60mg nic juice okay... but not alcohol
