Hi there, I jumped into RBAs about 1 week ago so I am very new to this and have lots to learn. I picked up a Kayfun Lite Plus Authentic V2 and Russian 91%. Both of these are authentic and not one of the clone variants. I started out on the Kayfun using 5-6 wraps around eckawool coming in around 2 ohms. I have done a few microcoils since than using 28g kenthal 8-9 wraps around an m3 machine screw and cotton clocking in around 1.6 - 1.8 ohms. The microcoil and cotton on the Kayfun is simply incredible and blows away everything I have ever vaped including the Aero tanks and nautilus. That said, I am a true believer in RBAs now. I decided I would order a Russian 91% as a 2nd RBA and expected a similar experience.

So using the same microcoil setup 28g kenthal 9 wraps around m3 screw and cotton at 1.8 ohms. So far I am disappointed with the results. Compared to the kayfun lite plus the flavor is less and far less vapor production. I have adjusted the air control and this really does not seem to be the fix. I have tried a few more attempts with making a new micrcoil and new cotton and its always the same results, just does not compare to the kayfun lite plus.

So I would be curious if there is a reccomended coil for optimal performance on the Russian91? Anyone else have both these RBAs and could share there impressions between the 2? Is the kayfun really that much better than the russian or is this more than likely an issue with my coils and the russian?

Doesn't seem to matter what juice I run I typically run a 6/7 wrap microcoil of 28 ga on a 3/32" bit. Comes out to about 1.2-1.3 ohms. I have personally had issues with anything lower resistance as it seems to over bake most juices because of the heat and anything higher doesn't give quite as much of a throat hit from the punch of the coil. You can also play around with 30 ga around a 6/7 wrap for a bit higher resistance if you want a coil that heats up faster but doesn't get quite as hot.

I used to wrap about 1.2-1.4 Ohm 28ga micro coils for my Kayfun clones, and they were good in horizontal as well as chimney configuration.
Then I tried 32ga twisted (3 strands) and found it produced less heat so dropped the Ohms to 1.0-1.1.
The twisted 32ga IMHO produces a better flavor than a straight 28ga micro coil, and the vapor is thick at around 1 Ohm but not too hot.
I have also done a nano diamond coil out of 28ga that produced fantastic flavor but really was too hot for me personally.
Also tried dual micro coils with 28ga at about 1.4 Ohms in the Kayfun. Again too hot of a vape for my tastes.

Currently I am running the 32ga twisted 3 strand micro coil at 7 wraps on about 3 or 4 of my setups. That seems to be what I like.

Some pictures for you guys (and gals) of Kayfun configs I have done:

I wanted to thank everyone for all the suggestions. I clearly have lots to learn and its obvious I just need to keep trying until I get something that works well for me. Last night I made another coil with 30ga kenthal. I believe it was around 7 wraps which clocked in around 1.6 ohms. I also used less cotton this time around than I have been using. I happy to say this coil has put the russian on par with my Kayfun Lite Plus. Its still not clear to me what the ramifications on using different size drill bits, m3 screws, etc. Wrapping around something with a larger diameter will create a larger coil. This makes it easier to pull the cotton through however what does it do to the ohms or resistance?

Nice! Just wanted to chime in and say that my Russian 91% has been the most solid tank I have ever owned/vaped on. Keep playing! I usually shoot for about 1.6ohms as that seems to be my sweet spot for now. 8-10 wraps on a 5/64th drill bit, using 28g A-1 Kanthal. I use organic hemp sliver as wick. I've yet to experience a dry hit/flood/leak/etc., and this was my first RBA. Something that clicked recently is that the less wick there is, the faster the liquid can be wicked to the coil. You don't want too little wick, as that comes with it's own subset of issues, but you also don't need as much as you think most of the time. Make sure you leave a little bit of room in the coil so that the wick can expand.

As far as larger diameter coils go, think about what you are doing when you create a wrap. In a slightly simplified manner: each wrap will increase resistance by adding length to your coil. As you increase the diameter, you are also increasing the length of your coil, and therefore the resistance. Really it's just a lot of play and practice, which is what I am learning now! Sounds like you are doing really well, so keep up the good work, and keep asking questions!
