I posted this thread on the sub-forum for battery issues... but got no replies - so, here is are details:

I use AW 18650s - they seem to last forever and now I am noticing that a couple of them the bottom part of the plastic shrinkwrap cover cracked away from the main sleeve so that now it is kind of a flap of plastic. I have kept on using them making sure to push that little flap up into the tube before threading in the bottom of my mod (Zenesis Standard). Is this safe??? I worry about it.. which is a good signal usually. But figured I would ask someone who may actually know.

Thanks for your replies!

as an electronics technician, i would say it is fine, as long as there is never any metal showing. you might want to just wrap the cracked part with some scotch tape to prevent further cracking.

edit- wrap the tape tight, all the way around the battery and onto itself, it should last a good long time. =)

It's fine. But if it bothers you you can buy some shrink wrap from places like fast tech. You just take the battery out of the old wrap, cut a piece of the wrap to size slip it in and hit it with a blow drier.

The biggest thing you have to worry about is a short across the top of a battery, metal to metal from the button on top the the metal on the side of the battery will kill your battery. Ever notice the paper ring around the button on the top? That is to stop a short from happening any damage to that top ring is something to worry about.

AW's have safe chemistry so it's not going to blow up the battery even if it did somehow short, which will not happen from the bottom anyway. You can always just tape it too. No problem at all.

I've got a bunch of shrink wrap if you want some. It's green and works great on 18650s. PM me your address if you want and I'll send you enough for a few. You can use a hair dryer to shrink it.

i had a brand new battery that I dropped, and the shrink wrap cracked all the way down the side. That's why I've got it.
