I looked on the Madvapes website looking for your 5v box mod. All that I saw used 14500 batteries. Is this what you plan to use in your mod. A link would be appreciated. Your mention of 18490 IMR's confused me. Which battery size are you looking for?

Between a protected Li Ion and a safe-chemistry high-drain IMR, my feeling is the IMR is a safer battery for PVs. That's what you asked for.

Although the recommendation is from some time back, I don't feel the state of safer batteries has changed much in that time. ECF battery guru's made a determination that the red AW IMR 18650 battery is the safest battery available. http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/ecf-library/129569-rechargeable-batteries.html I would argue that the entire lineup of AW IMR's would be as good of quality. I personally use AW IMR's in both my mechanical and regulated mods for safety reasons in 14500, 18350, 18490, and 18650.

I feel that you can't go wrong with an AW IMR, regardless of size, in terms of quality or safety. There may be other brands (Efest) which boast a higher mAh rating, but in my experience the AW's outperform the Efests hands down over time. They're a little more expensive, but I feel they will be a better long term investment over anything else in that size. http://www.rtdvapor.com/online-store/batteries

I would totally stay away from any Trustfire, Ultrafire, or Surefire batteries. These are second-tier quality brand name batteries that I really can't recommend.

You can read up on this information yourself on mod batteries in this resource I made and determine for yourself the merits of IMR vs protected. There are resource links at the end for more specific and detailed information should you be interested.
