They would start the post with a semi-random word in English, then switch to Chinese character for the “content” then end with an English word.

No, I mean block any post that has Asian characters any where in it. The rules state this is an English only forum. I do get what you are saying about them always trying to find a loop hole though. We have to at least make it difficult though.

Sites are attacked constantly. It’s a never-ending battle to which the war will never be won. Banning Asian characters is nothing more than a small hurdle to which may end up costing the site more money than it would to moderate and fish out bots. If they can not spam in one particular language, they will choose another.

As members all we can do is report the offense. Responding to the spam, even in a negative way, displays that the spam is being noticed which could very well lead to more spam from the same offender. That is the objective behind spamming a site - it is to become noticed in anticipation that they find one gullible user out of the many who may fall for the scam or advertisement.

One site, I don't remember which one, doesn't ban or block suspected bot posts. They allow them to be posted but they are automatically hidden from everyone BUT the poster. So the spammer thinks he is getting through and doesn't need to change his tactics but no one else ever sees it.

That could be a way to combat spamming but how much would that cost to implement into a site that does not already employ said practice?

Many forums use packaged software suites, so unless a feature such as hiding bots posts is part of the package, then such a feature maybe unrealistic.

And ECF (or any forum for that matter) is not always hit by bots. I recall a user who joined, sparked friendly conversation for a few days then spammed the forums.

If there is a will, there will always be a way.

That's known as a "shadow ban". :)

It's a shame we have so many unhappy campers around here. Me, I'm on top of the world. I have a PhD in Chemistry on its way from the National University of Singapore and I expect it to be of great use when I begin to mix my own juice...
I think that makes you over-qualified. :D
