So pleased to stumble across this thread. I'm new to vaping also and have purchased the Pico Dual and Pico Mega. Getting your head round how the atomizers are supposed to work is a nightmare and when I've asked veterans they just tell me to build my own coils???
Any other Pico users here so we can share information?
Cheers

Some would rather spend the time building and wicking coils but I would rather be vaping! Last order of coils makes the cost $2 each with an average life of close to a month. What is it you would like to know and maybe I can help?

Not sure what info that you're looking for that wasn't already covered...

Put coil in, set yor mod to the type of coil (metal) it is:

1) if TC type, adjust your wattage to about 30W and 360F in temp. to start with, and increase either or both until you find the right balance for you. Increasing the watts will heat the coil up faster, while the TC is the max temp that you're setting the coil to reach

2) if a watt only coil, start at 30Watts, and increase a bit at a time until you get to what you prefer

Atomizers work simply having a coil that heats the liquid to evaporate it, and the wick that the liquid is feed in a balanced manner to the coil.

You just have to figure out what settings you prefer, how hot you like the vapor to be. There's not really much else to it.

In terms of "why build" the coils, simply, the machine made factory ones tend to have duds, or not the balance you're looking for, plus at a few dollars each as opposed to 2 minutes and 10 cents of material... some liquids can kill a coil within a few days, so it can end up getting expensive. A bad setting can cause a dry-hit making the coil useless. Most coils tend to last no more than a week for most people depending on how much they vape, of course.

Rebuilding is simply a good investment (to get wire and cotton and learning how) if you have the time and patience to learn. These coils for the Melo, are fairly easy to do, and the rebuilds I've done, have always outdone the factory ones easily.

Did you get Melo tanks with your Pico's? If so, there is a rebuildable head available so you don't have to constantly buy factory coils.

Hi and thanks for the reply.
Well I'm using the standard tanks with the picks... the melo and melo mini. What's the difference with the different coils? I've used the .3 and .5 kathnal coils and the only difference I can detect is the .5 takes a split second longerto kick in. I had the notch coil .25 in the Pico mega box but don't really know if I'm using the Pico's correctly as I just use it in wattage mode as I didn't understand the temp control side of it till I read this thread :)
Don't feel like I'm getting the best out of either of these mods, especially when the YouTube reviewers seem to produce clouds and clouds on their Pico videos.

Thanks I will check it out but but don't wanna blow myself up so will have to watch some instructional vids first ;)

You don't need to buy any RTAs or such with these coils, they are completely rebuildable.

The Melo tanks are part of the Atlantis type cartridge "family"... it's a design that is very proven, as several companies have been making these cartridge coils that are near identical, which gives you a huge selection of types thanks to this.

The tanks I have that uses these coils:
Eleaf:
  • Melo 2 (sliding door for top fill is probably the best design in any tank)
  • Melo 3 (top fill is screw top)
Aspire:
  • Triton (V1 is a lock to close flow and pop-off top, excellent design, very easy, nice metal cage tank. V2, the metal cage was removed and the top is now a screw-top, I prefer V1)
Freemax:
  • Scylla (push and twist top fill, neat approach, works well, and you can get an kit version that comes with an RTA, which isn't the greatest but still, it's something to test out if you want to go with RTAs)

For coils, there's a long list, but the beauty is that most are cross compatible, here's a list of other tanks that I didn't mention here and how compatible they are: https://goo.gl/r54pW0

My preference are the Vaperaso ceramic, which I end up taking apart and rebuilding

Note: all of these coils are near identical and are easily taken apart and can be rebuilt, and to be honest, every one of the rebuilds Ive done are better than factory made. I support them enough that I made a image guide about this: Vaperrasso cCell rebuilding

As far as going for another tank, there's hundreds of tanks out there, overall, the Melo series are good ones for cartridge type coils. If you decide to go with RTAs, again, the selection is huge, and it'll be more a question of finding the tank that is "right" for your type of vaping and preferences...

That's awesome , thank you so much
Feeling less frustrated already, I will definitely look into rebuilding the atomizers as that's getting expensive.
Cheers for helping me out

No problem, and if you're worried about tools needed...

I started with a nail (that measured at 3.3mm) that I simply sanded the sharp edges, my 30 year old precision screwdriver set, a nail clipper to snip the wire, and my trusty mini pliers.

Most dollar stores can probably provide you with every tool you'd need to start with, for probably around 5$

For the coil and such, you do need to understand the ohm's law so to know how much wire to use, how many wraps, etc. Just have a look at the online calculator to figure out all that stuff. It might look bad at first glance, but it's pretty easy once you understand it.

I went from smoking 2 1/2 packs of Menthol cigs to using a pen type vape for one month, but I quickly outgrew it. I didn't want anything crazy so I got Pico istick 2 weeks ago. I'm also clueless about the ohms, batteries, etc. I have learned a lot from this site but when I realized I had a regulated mod that I really didn't have to worry as much as long as I followed the battery rules...the rest is more personal preference but I like getting advice from vaping vets. The straight to lung was hard getting used to so you are ahead of most new vapers! What I can't get over is how much e- liquid I am going through with the Melo. I had also got the baby beast tank at time of Pico purchase and I feel that it doesn't suck up as much. Good luck and just look around, most any question you have someone else has asked. I spend a couple hours at night reading this site....and vaping.

I got the Aspire Atlantis and recently the Eleaf ceramic coils. At first I hated the ceramic because it had zero taste, I even changed it within one day thinking I had bad one.
After reading that they need a couple tanks to break in, I hung in there and now I am getting flavor but my tank gets super hot when chain vaping, and I am only at max 45 watts with .5 coil. I do like the no spit back but I don't like how hot it gets. I would recommend the Atlantis. I also picked up a Cleito tank and I like it much better than the Melo 3. But that's just my opinion.
Good Luck!

It has something to do with the ceramic coils, I had read on another forum here that it happened to others, I have tried the tank on 2 mods, and it happens on both and it thins the juice, too. The mods themselves don't get hot, or even the vapor.. just the tank, this is at low wattage, too. I just take a few vapes and once it warms up I switch to another tank.

I don't think I'll be getting more ceramic coils, which stinks cuz no spit back and last a loooong time.

Thanks for looking out!

I just stick to the Vaperasso cCell (ceramic) and never had issues aside that they don't last too long, the ceramic ends up clogging up, but I then take the guts out and rebuild the cartridge/shell (with simple cotton) as it's the best cartridge/shell out there I find.

I know that they now have a two-piece version of it that I've heard some great things about.

But as far as heat goes, never had issues... but then, I never tried the Aspire and Eleaf ones... and I have no love at all for Aspire coils.

Yes, wattage mode is what you want. I would likely be between 30W and 40W with the 0.3 coil on 6mg liquid. Just make small wattage adjustments (0.5W increments) until you find your sweet spot.

There's no right answer for what the right wattage is, but you're likely in the right neighborhood.
Questions I'm new at this vape thing as well do I have to change anything if I replace my 0.3 cool to a 0.5 coil?
