The oldest is already puppy hunting for me. Granted since she’s a vet tech as well as a pre-k teacher, I’m thankful it’s puppies and not kiddos she’s trying to talk me into homing. She found the “perfect” aussie cattle dog puppy. Told her I can’t have a dog smarter and/or more motivated than me. Although, it might be entertaining to see how long “herding” Catdog would last lol.

They've got an insane amount of energy, and are highly intelligent. Take a lot of energy, but are fiercely loyal dogs.

I have probably a thousand pictures of the sunsets here. This wasn’t the most spectacular by any stretch, but it was the God hug I needed. I can send you better others if you want.
The kiddos (and us) got here around 6, so dinner was late. Ok, dinner was late cause I was toad hunting with my grandson . Priorities!!! ... So, I just caught the end of the sunset. When it first really blazes, it looks like a road of gold going across the lake.

Our big dog was an Australian Cattle Dog. She was pretty smart for o/d ing on chocolate think that fried a few brain cells (I guess she was pretty darn smart for smelling them and opening one of the "Turning' pantry shelves until she got to it. If she was "on training' for something she was super focused an obedient otherwise uh, yeah, well she was a bit ADHD impulsive type.

They. Are. Energetic. You take on an Aussie Cattle dog, you gonna be herded and you are going to run. Works best in conjunction with a 5 year old ADHD child but it sounds like you might be able to obtain BOTH!! Win.

I would adopt a Bassett hound if they weren't droolers. I hate that about a dog. Except the kid's dog, who will stand there puddling on the floor. She will come sneeze drool in my ear and I don't even get mad.

The appeal of the Bassett hound is like, many of their owners say they are so lazy they must be FORCED to go for walks. That sounds pretty cool just now (but I was at hospital all day. Sigh.)

Oh yeah, totally.

We had a blue merle Australian shepherd years ago. They're very similar to cattle dogs in terms of energy/intelligence/demeanor.

He was what I called "forever energy", never ending. Super intelligent. Very intense. Extremely loyal. Alert, yep and then some. Always herding the cats and German shepherd.

Both breeds are great dogs. You totally need to match their energy. They need much exercise. We always favored the dogs with a high drive and big intensity.

I knew an Australian shepherd once, name of Bart. He belonged to my boss, who often brought him into the office for the day. I took him (Bart, not my boss) for many a walk on the Esplanade (this was in Boston). Great excuse to get away from the office for a half hour.

Bart was not particularly smart or indeed energetic. His liveliest act was to nudge my arm as I was typing when he wanted to go outside.

He was a good boy, undervalued by his male person. Luckily, his female person got custody when the inevitable divorce happened.

I don’t want y’all to think I’d be out hunting for a replacement asap if something happened to Himself (trust me, there’s not one out there that could measure up to him). But, the princess sent me this picture. She’s still involved in rescue chat, even though she can’t foster GSDs with the baby in the house. They’re calling him a heeler/lab mix... who knows, but omg, that face just sucks me in. Most likely he’s already taken anyway

Yeah, I probably shouldn’t compare my hubs to a fur baby, but tbh... they rank pretty close in my heart on the level of how much I love them.

Good husbands and good dogs share similar traits. It's okay to compare them.

That is a cute little Aussie heeler alright. Ours was a blue and red heeler mix and I can't remember a week going by without like someone telling us she was the prettiest dog of all time. She really was. Especially all youthful and energetic.

I would say that is another trait we shared but that time of grey, grey hair made me realize a) I am too dependent on compliments and b) I also like them just fine.

LOL I was approaching this store after I finally went red again and there was this large knot of Hispanic men and one of em went, "Hey is that your natural hair color?"

I just looked at them and said, "Does this look natural to you? Come on."

The one dude said, "See, I told you." I turned to the lot of them and said, "Who cares? It's not like I am some prize pig, you know, where I have some unusual trait that you can show off to your friends. If I can get it this color, I can keep it this color. There better not have been money in this bet, or you are gonna have to hand it over, and I don't EVEN want to know."

So yeah, I also don't handle ALL compliments that well. Fortunately it was a well lit area.. LOL.

To be fair the only compliments I had been getting up to that point were pregnancy complements were they were like, "Oh, how far along are you?" and I would have to say to me, "You are youthful enough to bear a child that will have to be complement enough o keep me form getting STABBY. Etc.

Every time we went looking at puppies we would just sit down and let them crawl all over us. That was always great fun with a large litter. Eventually they sort themselves out, some lose interest, then one or two would keep coming back to one of us. Usually whichever one bonded best was the one. Pretty easy process.

@NolaMel having owned one, go for the heeler. I have to say our Aussie cattle dog was the dog that actually rehabilitated me into loving dogs, I used to be all "meh" on them.

They are fiercely loyal, incredibly smart and will love you from the moment you adopt, until forever.

They are definitely active and they LOVE interaction, but they are ALSO good at like, entertaining themselves in the yard. We used to put ours on a long run in the front yard because it wasn't fenced but she LOVED seeing what was going on. She could stay out there for hours.

The one thing I will say, your heeler is going to love you so much, make sure if you get one, you expose it to a wide variety of human interaction of various sorts, as a puppy, and correct any growling etc. We actually had ours trained to be "loving unless otherwise directed" and we had a "Act like you will kill this person signal." It was useful especially as we were rehabbing the ah, house of ill repute in East Baltimore and the lights came on and well, people came by at 2 am.

They really are fantastic. Sometimes I'm like (now she's gone) "I wish I loved that dog more" because I love most dogs now, even our freak show Chihuahua mix. LOL. She was a sweetheart.

Nothing like a puppy for taking your mind off things.
