A7 RBA set-up for bottom feeding - YouTube @lazymatt, I did some searching, and I was going to try this method tonight, just because I have some of those q tips at my house. I will venture out into the city tomorrow and find some proper cotton wick.
Uuh, how to put it gently. It's hard to knock on someone that bothered to make a very nice and instructional video, while I haven't. But that way is a lot more involved than it needs to be and produces a PITA results.
By all means, try it. I have, didn't like it, but enjoyed the time spent playing.
There's another A7 thread on the Reo forum here, with lots of tips and pictures. Here's what works for me:
1. Roll a coil around a solid object. Toothpick is what I use. It allows you to space out coils just right, measure resistance as you roll it, and (most importantly) allows you to make consistent coils each time. This is the stage where you want to get the resistance you want. Incidentally, 7.5 loops of 30ga kanthal around toothpick is 1.7 ohm
2. Attach the coil with the said solid object between your posts. Keeping your toothpick/needle/whatever in place is key here. It makes it a lot easier to move and adjust the coil without deforming it. Make sure that after the screws are tightened, the coil does not touch the posts or air duct. The closer to air duct, the more vapor and less throat hit.
3. Pull the toothpick out. Using a needle threader or excess kanthal wire, pull your wick through the coil. If using cotton yarn (which I like to), make sure it's not tight in the coil. You need to be able to move it around pretty freely. When wet, you want it to be able to expand.
4. Chop off the extra wick sticking out. Here there are various schools of thought. I leave a good inch on each side, and tuck it all into the cup of the atty. That allows me to only have to squonk every 20 minutes or so. Other people like to cut it pretty short, about 1/4 inch. That will give you more clear flavor, but you will have to squonk more. I justify longer wick with the fact that I make my own juice and can just add more flavor. That way I still have plenty of flavor, but don't have to squonk quite as often.
5. Put a few drops of juice to prime the wick, screw on the top cap, give it a blind squonk (*) and vape to your heart's content.
(*) blind squonking is when you gently squeeze the bottle while sucking (for lack of more scientific term) on the drip tip. Stop squeezing the bottle when you hear slight gurgle. That pulls the juice straight into the atty without spilling half of it in your hands.
