Hi guys,

So this is a bit embarassing but I'm going to go ahead and throw it on here anyway.

I've been vaping since a week now and haven't touched an analogue since. Feel great, no cravings for analogues whatsoever, very happy with a seemless transition from smoking to vaping (so far at least).

I have noticed though that my previously frequent 'bowel movements' are now few and far between. I used to be regular like clockwork (once a day) but now I notice that I cannot 'go' but once every three days or so. I also feel like I'm not digesting my food as quickly. It feels like it lingers in my stomach for hours after eating. Never had this problem when smoking. Seems like my gastro-intestinal tract is on a strike or something.

Is this a side effect from quitting analogues? Has anyone else experienced this while switching from smoking to vaping? Did your body adjust to this and become regular again after a certain amount of time?

Sorry for the subject, but to me this is the only very noticeable thing that has changed bodywise so far. I just hope that I can enjoy my daily 'relief' again soon without turning to laxatives or something.

For the record: I think my diet was (and still is) quite healthy: oats, lots of fruits, fiber, vegetables,...

Would like to hear from fellow vapers that hopefully had a similar experience. And really hope that this is a temporary phase and not a permanent adjustment of my digestion.

Thanks everyone!

Tom

It sounds like you need a slightly higher level of nicotine. Nicotine stimulates peristalsis, the movement of the bowel. Once when I quit cold-turkey, I was constipated for 3 wks, and that was awful.

You can go up just slightly on your nic level, maybe 3mg more than you're vaping now, let your body get used to it for a month or so, then try reducing it again but very slowly, 1mg at a time, giving your body about 2 wks-ish before trying to go lower again. It will get accustomed, but it won't do it quickly.

Congratulations twice, one for the quitting smoking, the other for your "relief"! LOL

A suggestion for others having the same problem--(caveat: DO NOT do this if you have any kidney problems)--sprinkle a pinch of Epsom salt in your water or coffee or whatever all during the day. Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate. Magnesium is a mineral vital for hundreds of chemical processes in the body, and most of us are magnesium deficient. One teaspoon of Epsom salt is about 493mg, which is a little more than our recommended minimum daily requirement. The kidneys will eliminate any excess magnesium that your body can't use in the urine (UNLESS you have kidney disease). A little at a time during the day should help with bowel problems and also provide some much needed magnesium for your cells. Magnesium is difficult to absorb, but you will get some, and it will make you healthier in the meantime (as opposed to other harsh laxatives).

The dose to use for a stronger laxative effect is 2-4 teaspoons in a full glass of water, repeatable in four hours if needed. That is quite strong, and I wouldn't suggest that dosage unless one is absolutely desperate or has a colonoscopy scheduled the next day. :D Just a pinch in liquid all day should do the trick. If your bowel becomes too loose, back off the Epsom salt just a little. We need the magnesium, whether there are bowel problems present or not. Magnesium is actually more bioavailable through the skin (soaking in it in a basin or tub) rather than oral administration, but that's off topic for this post. Again, I repeat--DO NOT do this if you have any kind of kidney problems.

Again, congratulations!!!! :vapor:

Hi Sooter, I know exactly what you mean. I used to wake up and smoke two analogues on an empty stomach. Then take breakfast, smoke a couple in the car on my way to work and when I arrived at work I was in the bathroom within the first ten minutes of arriving. :) Regular like clockwork for me too. I'm certainly bummed out by this (hopefully temporary) constipation spell but I'm definitely not going back to cancer sticks for the sake of pooing.

I'll just wait for the bowel strike to end and hopefully when things get going again my digestion will return to its former rhytm.

Djeez I never discussed my bowel movements on a public forum before. :p

Letooke, if you can't talk about pooping with your friend, who can you talk about it with????? We've all been there ;)

All those above who mention nicotine having a laxative effect are correct. You might try a slightly higher nic in the a.m. to help "relieve" your issues.....

Did you see the "House" episode where he prescribed cigarettes to a patient who was constipated (It really is a classic! - The best part was Patient: "But won't these kill me?" House: "I prescribe drugs all the time that can kill people")

Actually, the House episode, it was the opposite problem. He was having ........ and having kids sit on his lap all day was making it more of an issue (he was a mall Santa Claus). He had inflammatory bowel disease, which cigarettes have been known to help (only 1 or 2 per day).

However, a common side effect of nicotine withdrawal is, in fact, constipation.

I am not at all convinced that the PG in vaporizers contributes to dehydration in any significant way, any more so than some common food items. This seems like a bit of information that you only find about propylene glycol inside e-cig communities. Yes, it's hygroscopic, but so is coffee, caramel, and table salt. Sure, drink more water since it isn't going to hurt you, but likely it's more a nicotine thing and a stress thing (from quitting) causing your constipation more than anything else.

You refrigerate prunes? We may have a language/terminology discrepancy. When I say "Prunes", I mean dried plums, not fresh ones. Prunes are to plums what raisins are to grapes.

lmao! Yes we certainly did have some kind of language barrier going on there. Since I'm Belgian and my mother tongue is Dutch I was thinking of the fresh fruit, not the dried things. So ok, I have a bag full of plums in my fridge. :)

Prunes or plums, today it did the trick. :)

Well nice to see all this poop talk! Happy vaping. Not so happy pooping.

Well I guess quitting smoking is a shock to the system in every way imaginable. I guess my body just needs time to get over it.

To poop or not to poop... It seems to go both ways after quitting. Not everybody has the same reactions.

I've been over a week now without an analogue. I expected to be coughing and hacking up all kinds of gross things but not a single cough yet... Although it is kinda gross I wish I was hacking up things all over the place. That way I would be sure that all the tar was being cleared out. For the moment it seems it's just sitting there. :)

I switched from cigarettes to vape in the middle of December, after 36 years, much of it 2 PAD. I had a NASTY smoker's cough for many years. It went away the first week and I never hacked up anything. Some people do, some don't. Don't worry about it if you don't.

After my appendectomy, the ........ was awful, and it just would not go away. 5 days after the surgery, I went back to smoking, and within 48 hrs, the ........ was gone. Of course it took another month to get the cigarettes gone again too. :D

I was already suffering a very long-standing borderline case of dehydration, had been fighting leg cramps for years, if not decades. Vaping made the dehydration so bad, it was to the point that it no longer matter how much water I drank, I had severe edema of both ankles, and the bottoms of my feet were so lumpy and tender, I almost could not walk. That was another matter I had to clear up, before I could return to 100% vape only. For me, it took adding coconut water and other high-potassium foods, lots of bananas and canteloupe, a lot MORE water, and decreasing regular table-salt and caffeine quite drastically, to get rid of the "cankles" and the sore feet. so now I still have my coconut water/pineapple juice drinks twice a day, and have remained at about 90% less table-salt (I use my husband's Lite Salt, which is potassium chloride) and 80% less caffeine, and the edema has not returned, although I've been back to vaping-only for 6 wks now. The PG *and* the VG are both hygroscopic, and if the water that they snatch from our mucus membranes is not replaced, there WILL be problems!
