Hi I have some questions/concerns about ecig use .I was a regular smoker for 40 years.Tried numerous times to quit but could never make it stick. Last xmas I got really sick with pneumonia and had to go to hospital ,I cut down but still couldnt quit ,eventually I got better. I still had the gumed up lungs and permanent smokers cough then 4 months ago I got sick again and was able to make the decision to quit cigaretes I bought a refillable ecig with the high nicotine and havnt had a cigarete since. After about a few weeks my cough disappeared and my breathing improved heaps,I felt much better all over, even started excercising . So far so good, then maybe a month ago I notice a build up of goop in my chest again and Ive started coughing again and my breathings not so good anymore. Energy level has dropped and I don't feel like excercising anymore. My concern is the ecig causing me to be this way .Has anyone else experienced anything like this.
Im also concerned that ive just swapped addictions .

I'd get a doctor to check lungs - but personally, I had nearly immediate cure of the smokers hack, improved breathing, and stopped getting colds that would turn into bronchitis (knock on wood) every year. The only cold I've had since vaping I fought off in a couple days. Period.
No return of the problems like you are describing AT ALL.

I'd search for other causes...but also see a doc...

Hope it gets better again!

Also a 40+ year (ex)smoker here too. Congrats on making the switch!

Have you recently changed E-Liquids?

Some complain of issues with too much PG and others with too much VG. I've also noticed some flavors and sweetners leave an aftertaste and/or thick coating in throat and lungs.

I've switched to unflavored juice that I mix myself and a light menthol mix that I make by adding some pure menthol crystals to some unflavored. For me this does the deal and it's a hell of a lot cheaper than "store bought" e-juice.

Personally if I vape a mix of more than 40% VG my lungs get very heavy...more than 50 % PG and I've got eternal cottonmouth. I've experimented and found that for me, anywhere between 50/50 and 40/60 and it's all good.

Hello and welcome to the forum. Glad to have you here!:)

Vaping is very dehydrating. Drink lots of water.

There are usually 4 different components in juice:

1. Propylene Glycol - the "flavor carrier" of e-liquid. A secondary source of "throat hit", but not as strong as the nicotine concentration. Some people have a sensitivity or even an allergy to PG. It's very thin.
2. Vegetable Glycerin - the "vapor maker" of e-liquid. Used as a sweeter in many food sources, and also as a skin emollient. It's very thick.
3. Flavoring
4. Nicotine

For me, the problem is too much VG and I can't breathe at all. And although my asthma improved a great deal right at the start, after a while it actually got worse than when I was smoking. Hardly anything in my lungs to cough up, but just breathless and wheezy all the time. I've had to start taking asthma maintenance drugs, instead of just relying on my rescue inhaler, and that has been a huge relief. I smoked for 39 yrs, so I probably have a lot of damage that needs time to heal, and since I do have asthma, I probably can't ever expect to have 100% normal lungs; just glad I'm no longer making it worse.

1. You are swapping an addiction with an addiction. That's OK.

2. Based on what you've said, you're already struggling with some real health issues. I know when you make a big change, and then other things happen, it makes perfect sense to assume one change is causing the other thing -- but correlation doesn't equal causation. Smoking takes a real toll on the body, and vaping doesn't make it all magically go away whether it's mental or physical. Over time your lungs and other parts will heal (with some teething pains as cillia regrows and such) but it isn't a magical silver bullet that will make you want to start or stop exercising -- it's harm reduction so you aren't taking in carbon monoxide and all the rest.

3. I'm going to second what the other superheros have suggested about playing with PG/VG and even nicotine content in your eliquid, as well as even flavors. If your lungs are already struggling, for some more VG helps. For others, VG hitting the lungs makes them feel coated and worse. Lowering your nic might actually help.

4. Seconding again about drinking almost-excessive amounts of water. A lot of times people will find themselves loving the switch to ecigs, and end-up chain vaping at a high nic while not drinking enough water. The nic level sneaks up on them, and dehydration can end up feeling like you're sick or depressed.

5. Hang in there, and keep in touch with your doctor about how you're feeling. Big changes (especially with addictions) can cause our brains to do weird things.

to ecf fagoff. So glad you are here and a big congrats on the vaping. So sorry to hear that you are starting to have some issues. First off I would probably go to the doctor and get that reassurance that there is not anything seriously wrong. I am not sure about the weather where you are or if you have experienced seasonal allergies. Could also be a slight pg sensitivity that can develop at any time. Changing to a higher vg juice would at least let you see if you notice any differences. I'm sure it could be a number of things and I wish you well. Please let us know how you are doing. Mainly because we care but it could also help others that might have had a similar problem. Good luck.

Hi fagoff and welcome to ECF. I smoked for 37 years and switched a couple of years ago. I did not experience what you are now, but even if I had I would say the same thing. Please see a doctor.

Yes, it could be one of a few vape related issues, but it could also be from a completely different cause and it could be serious.

On switching addictions, it currently looks like vaping carries much less risk than smoking. I weaned myself off nicotine over the first year of vaping. I sometimes vape very little for a day or three and then get bored and vape more for a day. I could probably quit vaping pretty easily but I'm not motivated to do it. If you were motivated to do that IMO it would be much easier than quitting cigarettes.

Ive been a smoker for 4 years and I recently quit in September and bought an Ego and Clearomizer starter pack. I haven't looked back at cigarettes since. But recently I've gotten into rebuildables and ever since I've started dripping and "cloud chasing" (I feel like calling it that is such a trend) I've developed a bit of a cough. I started dripping in October and thats when I started to notice a little cough, but only while I'm chain vaping. I tend to have a little build up in my chest every now and then but maybe thats just because allergies and the weather. Who knows....either way. You're not alone man.
