Hi, everyone! If I could get a little bit of info here, I would greatly appreciate it. I just started the ecig last night - my daughter bought me an njoy (NPRO) from a local smoke shop. I really want to give this thing a try, and have showed a lot of interest in ecigs for awhile but never actually got up the courage to take that next step. Ok, what I want to know is this .. I already have a real bad smokers cough, and it doesn't help that the family all just recently went through the flu with all the coughing that comes with it. So, I charge the ecig, take the first draw, and cough cough cough. I can draw off my regular "real" cig, and the cough is not as bad (its there, just not as bad). What gives? Is this going to get better? I know that inhaling anything might cause a cough, but I thought things got better with an ecig, not worse.

Am I just panic-driven? I can handle the off taste, the different feel of the "cig" in my fingers, but the cough - I don't know about this! I know I cannot quit smoking altogether ... and I am really hoping that the ecig is going to be my answer.

It takes some time and practice. Vaping on an e-cig is different than smoking a cigarette. Are you drawing right into your throat? If so, try drawing into your mouth and the inhaling a bit. You can try taking smaller drags...or, try without inhaling for now. You will absorb nicotine through your mucus membranes, like smoking a cigar. There are other things that factor into "throat hit", like the juice - How much nicotine and percentage of PG. Don't pressure yourself, just try it here and there and see if it's something you can enjoy to help you get off tobacco cigarettes.

Vaping is a little different from smoking, try taking a slow easy smooth draw, not a puff like a cigarette. Takes a little pratice an soon is as easy as an analog cig. You can quit smoking altogether, vaping is not smoking, no fire, no burning, no 4,000 chemicals, no smokers cough.

And if you have any questions of need advice, please post here, ECF is full of nice people that are willing to help, and understand what it takes to quit smoking.

p.s. Welcome to ECF !!! :)

Thanks everyone! And I am NOT going to give up on this! I am so tired of not being able to breathe. That is just no way to live. I honestly feel like such an idiot for even becoming a smoker to begin with ... and now to not be able to "technically quit". I really do feel comfortable with my ecig, I just have to find the "way to make it work best for me". As for the dry atty (dfs405), I am using it as it came, didn't buy anything to go with it, and am going to be putting in my order for some "supplies" like the blanks and my own liquids. I always have been a do-it-yourself type of gal, why stop now! LOL! This first is just what my daughter got for me as her "hint hint hint" gift to kick me in the ....!

I will probably be coming in here a lot in the near future! I have read so many success stories as well as seen a LOT of support and great advice. (Been reading in here without joining for quite a while!)

If you're a do-it-yourself type of gal you are going to love vaping and e-cigs. :) It can certainly become quite a hobby - different types of PV's, different types of ways to vape (drip, carts, cartomizers, tank, mods, etc.). Then there's the juice, don't even get me started. There are many vendors and 100s if not 1000s of flavors, shoot you can even make your own!

Welcome to ECF :)

E-cigs are really the best invention ever. The best part is that it can be as easy or as complicated as you want it to be. We have a lot members here who smoked for years and years, we know what you are going through right now.

In fact, our average ECF member is 41-60 years old and smoked for more that 25 years - we are pro smokers and it worked for us, it'll work for you too.

Just take it slow, ask a lot of questions, and don't give up! I won't lie to you, the e-cig you have is a nice little one but not everyone is able to completely quit smoking using one. Don't get discouraged! There are a hundred different ones out there, there IS one that's perfect for you and most of us start out on a "training e-cig" before we end up with the one that we love.

As for the coughing, your lungs are used to smoke but not used to vapor so they will try to expel it just like they did when you first started smoking. I remember the first time inhaled smoke my eyes watered up and I coughed, same thing with e-cigs. It'll pass, just take airy inhales and it'll get easier.

Good luck! :)

Try to drag slower on an ecig. If it's an automatic battery you may need a fake drag to warm it up when it's cold, then the real drag. (I prefer manual batteries - the button makes it make vapor and you don't have to worry about dragging hard enough to make vapor.) BTW I think AZSMokeFree sells a manual battery for RN4081 which should work on Npro.

Drag the vapor into your mouth first then inhale. It's a bit weird to breath it in at first. And it can be more drying than smoking so drink fluids. You could also try a lower nicotine level at first - it would be less harsh.

Since you cough after inhaling smoke or vape, but it seems worse after vaping, the issue is probably just your technique. You should get the hang of it within a few days if your NPRO is consistent.

Curious what flavor and nic level your cartridge is. Is it possible you're drawing longer and/or harder on the NPRO to achieve the same feeling in your mouth that you're accustomed to with your regular brand of smokes?

That said, I started on a blu and the only thing that could induce a cough when drawing on one of those is a bone-dry atomizer. ;) Make sure the NPRO's atomizer is getting enough fluid from the cartridge.

There is this stuff in our lungs called Cilia. They are like little hairs. They are there to catch moisture and particles... and a lot more. Smoking seriously harms them and stops their ability to do their jobs. The Vaporized juice goes in and sets off your coughing reflex.
Mistress Nomad has some really good info in her vids on this. It will take a little time for them to heal so take shallower hits off your PV till you can handle bigger hits. Also watch your nic lvl, the higher it is the harsher. You may need it but go gentle.

Maybe take smaller drags and then inhale! This is something your body tries to reject just like it did when you took your 1st drags off a cig! It is not used to this yet and it's foreign to it!
Hang in there and with the right equipment and juice setup it will get better!
30 year hard core smoker here and I did it and you will too! We are all pulling for you and happy to help! Keep us posted on your journey!

Like other posters more or less said, remember that this is vapor, not dry smoke. Ever take a plane in August from, say, Arizona to Boston? Dry air in Arizona, thick, muggy vapor filled air in Boston, and you feel like you cannot breathe for a little while. Eventually, however, your body gets used to it. Same with the ecig. You will get used to inhaling vapor instead of smoke within a few (I'd say two to three) vape sessions.
That being said, expect to cough up a bunch of crap for a while. You've got years of tar and mucus built up in your lungs and throat, and the PV is acting like a more direct humidifier that you'd put in a kids room if they have bad bronchitis. But after that, no more morning wheezing and coughing!
