I had silica that turned black when I torched it and tasted horrible too. Come to find out, it wasn't the right stuff. The company I bought it from was shady and trying to sell that crap as the real deal. I tossed it and bought from a different source. Like mentioned above, if it turns black, it should just be momentary, then it should glow red.

If you can torch it glowing red it should be bright white. Only use a blue flame to do it. , if you have a good build, no hot spots, with proper contact, not too tight,. what I find takes away the initial silica taste is putting the silica in a small baggy and dripping some juice on it just enough for it to fully absorb then let it set over night. This gets it nice and primed & takes away the break in period for me.
