Silica Wick Question

I just purchased some 2.5mm silica wick.
Started making my first wick and coil.

I noticed that if I tried to bend the wick it would almost desintegrate. Is this normal for it to be so brittle?
Should I wet it first? I haven't seen anyone (on the million videos) have issues like this.
