Forums are addictive, and this interface is wonderful. I finally get the fuss about social media!
Hankering for conversation and searched the keywords and found a post wondering why X device was cheaper in silver, but that's about it::

How come metal / silver colours are often cheaper than the rest?

Do they cost less to make? Simply less popular (then why are they available often enough)? And if they aren't popular, why? Just the finger-stains thing or is there some socially ratified aesthetic I've failed to acquire= in other words, am I weird fo liking mi mod shiny?

No paint or finish is cheaper. Lucky for me since I love silver gear.:D

Paint and plating cost money in materials and production time. Without those extra resources used, production cost is less, and can be sold for less to make the same profit margin.

The vape industry is one of the few places I see this happen. Most of the time I see companies price an unpainted item the same as it's painted counterpart.

    vaping companies are less greedy!
    or it actually incetivizes sales
I seriously doubt they are less greedy. Almost everything gear related we use is made in China. Our vendors probably get a better deal on plain silver and some pass it along to us, some don't.

Part of the issue is less cost over a well coated finish. But part of the issue is while a bit more money, if not done extremely well, colored finishes on vape stuff may prematurely wear which is unattractive at best and downright bad at worst if it’s say a paint finish bin the inside of a tank. Then the paint/finish is in your juice, not just unattractive.

I usually stick with metal finishes for stuff like tanks, especially if the inner chambers are colored, and even mods that look or priced like inexpensive finishes, as less to mar up over time.

I agree when the coating wears it looks awful. I just thought that the silver colors were less popular and that many vapers go for more colorful schemes so the silver is priced less. Fortunately for me, overall I prefer it for the reasons noted above so I usually get great deals --especially when there are sales.

Have to agree with what has been said already here. Silver 'finish' is most often in my experience either stainless steel or a durably plated steel which are almost always more durable than any other type of finish you can get. There are a few good alternatives like CeraKote, but they tend to be expensive and not often offered.

I have a few mods that are painted which can be stripped and re-done or just polished when they wear down. I have had a few mods that have other platings on them which can generally also be stripped and re-finished. But the most durable surfaces I have are SS, which works just fine for me :)

    I know, I'm boring

so turns out i been a smart boy all along. and i'd thought i'd simply never experienced youth, liking the classic, straight SS look.

all make sense about the finishes. @Eskie has a ctually inhaled the peeling paint (or just a hypocondriac) @Ryedan seems to have been going all silence-of-the-lambs on his mods for quite sometime. so it sounds convincing.

but i point out what @chellie said about finding deals at sales time. which reminded me i've actually also found pink stuff here and there cheaper, but it may have always been with an older product, when only the pink (and sometimes silver as well) version is still available.

+sometimes it's with plastic stuff as well, the grey stuff are on sale, or even not on sale, but the only colour left, everryone having gone for colourful stuff, except the solemn(er) types, who might go for silver as more natural, effortless and classic (=== maturer), but even they go for black. So it might be a popularity thing too no?

black and gunmetal sell out first because a black or a gunmetal mod goes with any 'ole outfit.

girly colors are often the last to go.. My son is still sporting the tiffany blue and white mod I got for him for 20 bucks - I threw in a wrap to make it palatable but he has no concerns about his manhood being questioned so he's never used that wrap I spent money on.. lol

Those are often the last go because even though we buy mods quite regularly it's not often that Tiffany blue or pink is the called for mod to match that outfit..

silver is kind of plain and neutral, but I find it's often third or fourth in the list for popular colours, much due to the neutrality and the durablility of the finish.

I actually can't say I have a lot of silver mods.. I think I have two? perhaps three at most. Black and gunmetal are my favorites, blue a close third, then gold and black, then ultem, maybe ultem before gold and black..

but those are the colors that match the majority of my outfits.. lol. Yea.. I'm a girl..just one with 5 grandkids..

    oh yeah those
huh.. i took 'wrap' more traditionally (/literally?)
i was wondering who uses those

i don't know, never really considered it looking nice to others. i've had a few things when i simply enjoyed how pretty the thing looks, somwhat added to the pleasure of using it. it did however occur to me how what impression it might give when i take it out of my pocket to sit down in a seminar or colloquium or the like_ what type of subtlety would help avoid seeming too worldly to more solemn prof's and grad's. i'm in a very tweedy field.

@Opinionated, la fashionista, girl may be an understatement. i mean, if that's what makes a girl, the missus is a male bear_ i can't count the number of times i stopped her goin' out in grey and green or some other mess.

    any protective value to these?
