How many others are like me and just like a simple basic coil? 8 to 10 wraps of kanthal with a cotton wick just seems to work perfect for me.

I have tried others, twisted wire, braided, clapton. And not just wire either but stove top coils, chimney coils and other strange stuff. Non of it seemed to make a difference to me. The flavor was never any better (or worse for that matter) with a fancy coil. Then again I might be broken because I can't taste my wire or wicking material either.

All these fancy coils ever did for me was use more wire, time, batteries and juice. Now I understand if you are vaping really low ohms then yes, these kind of designs are a way to get a lower resistance coil, but for those of us who vape over .5 ohms it never seemed worth it to me.

I can notice flavor differences with different atomizers and builds, but the coil design has never seemed to matter to me. And for me, it seems the builds that produce LESS vapor seem to have the most flavor, not the other way around.

I guess I am just old school and odd, but it's ok, I like it lol.

I learned how to build starting with Aliens, i'd be curious to know if theres a huge difference in flavor that I can see myself as well. They might be more "stable" than claptons - tighter wrapping maybe? - which would make wicking them easier.

Starting with Aliens is a pretty big achievement. I still struggle with those. Now my defaults are a plain Clapton or a 2 core fused Clapton build. All those frame stapled cross weaved superconductor coils look great, but frequently don't vape all that well. There are some tanks like the single coil Merlin v1, original Serpent mini, or the Bellus v1 that do great with just a simple round coil, not even a need for a Clapton for good performance.

It's fun to play with variations, but for an adv, going back to sorta basics works best, at least for me. And my choices are based on flavor, not so much cloud.

Right now I use 28 gauge kanthal on either a 2.3 mm bit or a 3mm bit. I normally shoot for between 1 - 1.8 ohms depending on what I am putting it in.

I just got a temp control mod so I have been playing with some 28 gauge Ni 200 wire as well. Should have gotten a larger diameter now that I know more about its properties. I have some 26 gauge SS wire on the way though with my new tank, batteries and charger. Should be here tomorrow I hope.

I recently got back into vaping because my brother showed me how to build more advanced stuff. You should have seen my first attempts at a simple 3 wrap kanthal it was an embarrassment haha

Well I tried the 26ga 9 wrap 3mm kanthal coils, lots of them, and now seriously thinking about going back to factory atomisers and shelving my RTA tank. The factory atomisers used to last about 10-12 days, but with the RTA deck I'm going through wicks like there's no tomorrow. I'm better at BBQ's then at building coils. At least with a Barbie I don't burn everything..... I've tried so many different variations of wicking using cotton bacon, and they all burn. The only time they don't burn is if I run really low watts, but then I get no flavour. 2 more things to try; 1) spacing the coils and 2) using titanium wire, which I just ordered, in TC mode. I must have 2 left hands or something. If no success then back to factory atomisers.

Try rayon wicking. It doesn't burn. If you are in a rush, I think that you can purchase rayon tampons but you have to have the right brand? I think some folks still use them (haven't tried mine yet, which arrived with some rayon from a generous member.) Okay, I know it sounds gross, but I think it might be tampax but you have to make sure you have the right kind? You could do a search, though I do understand some members find that idea kind of gross, but it's cheap, honestly.... I think you want the organic rayon or something?

You may need to adjust your build/wattage too, or even consider TC? If you haven't already? I think this is resolvable, honestly. :)

Good luck...

Thanks Anna. I've seen Rayon Cellucotton for sale online. I'm assuming it's the same thing. I'm not adverse to disassembling tampons but I might get a few strange looks at the local chemist if I rummage through their stock to see what the different brands are made of....lol
I'm thinking 'stick with the cotton' though. If everyone else can do it without bursting into flames then I'm hoping that I can as well. I guess Rome wasn't built in a day. It would just be nice not to have to change the wick after every tank full.
