also, looking at the link i posted from sparkfun, and the madvapes reader. they are just a 3 digit, 7 segment display. couldnt you just salvage one out of anything, like say a cheap watch, and then itll just be a matter of coordinating the wires to the proper segment? watch might not work being no spot for a decimal, but digital thermometer or such?

You'd need to take the electronics with it. Otherwise, you'd need to build your own circuit. It's not terribly difficult to build a voltmeter using off-the-shelf parts and it would be a good entry level project. You'd need parts like this, this, and this

range to 4.3v. not sure if thats STRICTLY.... sounds like its for single cell testing. something to look at

I thought about using an LCD but in the end I just put a green LED with a 3.0 zener diode so that when the Green LED goes out I know it's time to switch batteries. Looking to build a more complex version that uses multiple LEDs for a bar graph type indicator but my first prototype didn't work right.
