Why is your juice blue?
Looks like it has coloring added, IMO could be something in the colorant causing the burning & premature wick failure problems.

There is no way I would vape anything with coloring added, nope not even a little.
I have a few liquids and i thought this one would look better for a picture. I mostly use Respiro ejuice and its mostly clear.

@mountainbikerma
Yes when i fire the coil seems to fire nicely.

@smokeybear
I am not totally sure how to do the big "Z" wicking, any pics that could guide me?

@Wruff
I had a kangertech previously and i had no problems with it. I shifted to tfv4(So called upgrade) and well i am here!

This is a pic, after the change last night. I do get a random dry hit (my throat hurts a little), not much flavour, but if you look at the cotton it is not even burnt. This is after i moved to kanthal 26g with 5 wraps. Running on 0.8ohms. Even the coil does'nt look gunky; but the flavour is almost not existent, burns my throat after a few drags.

Sorry I couldn't grab a pic because my camera is acting funny right now. Basically what you want to do is instead of having the wick come down from each side of the coil, you want to fold it up so that it covers the bottom portion of the deck where the juice well is drilled into the deck. Or you can try this method, both are exactly alike, except the navy nest has more wicking material.

Thanks for the link; but the wick he is using is completely different from the cotton am using. I guess i have to purchase such wicks to even try it out.

No I'm just stating it's the general idea of the wicking, but you don't have to use the same wicking material he is using. I use Koh Gen Do cotton where I can cut off a piece roughly the same size as the inner-diameter of the coil and slide it through, and it remains straight just like silica wick and what not. Cotton in general is a great wicking material.

So basically for the rough idea, use the method of wicking that he describes, but with cotton instead.

Okay, that's great you started with a kanger subtank and then moved on up to the TFv4. That's what I did too. TFv4 takes some trial and error, but YOU'RE GONNA GET IT, and be really pleased with the vape you get from this tank.

I'm dry burning/rewicking my coils tonight on my TFv4, so I'll take a few pics along the way and post them here so that maybe you can get something from that to help you, though I do use the R2 (dual coil) rta where you're using the single coil. Can't hurt though if I post a couple pics here later as the idea is basically the same.

p.s., I watched your video of your coil and that looks a-okay.

im running premade claptons in the tfv4's rca base with my own Japanese cotton, its wicking and vaping fantastic @25watts 0.65ohms

trying running ur cotton down the wick holes and kind of stuff it

Hey vapers,
I am all new to this vaping thing, and still trying to get my head around it.
I recently purchased an ipv d2 and a smok tfv4, i am not even sure now if these two can get along together.

The wicks seem to burn way too fast, i have to change it in half an hour. Never had this issue when i was on my kangertech.

  • I am on a single coil RBA
  • I have tried different widths of cotton all with same result
  • Used kanthal 24 and 26, still same
  • tried coil wraps ranging from 6 to 10
  • Wattage ranging from 7 to 53 on the ipv d2.
  • My juices are not too sweet, so i don't think its because of caramelizing. Even if it is, it does'nt make sense how fast the wick burns.
  • The wick kind-of breaks into half, indicating too much heat?

At some point, after using a little while, the juice changes into darker color and probably thicker, and starts to leak at the bottom. I am totally lost at how to get this tfv4 to work nicely.

I really don't know who your post was aimed to so I guess I'll reply to my previously said statement.

My response was directed to the Op, thus no post quote per Thread request.
Post was also as to the combination of equipment.
IVP-D2, single 18650 device with 75w max limit and a TFV4 capable of up to 140w operation.
24ga. can/will function, however 26Ga will allow for more efficient power to heat return in turn allowing better battery life while still producing a quality vape within Mods mid level capabilities.

Why build to to a requirement of 60w-80w when the same performance can be accomplished at 30w-50w? o_O

First learn..............next, advance.

Here's some shots wicking the TFv4 tonight, @Veeru PV. The R2 deck, but same application on single coil.

Using high VG DIY juice (92% vg), 26g kenthal wire.

Earlier this evening, after 8 days of 15ml/day vaping. :)

Here we see the wicking in the juice channels...

All cleaned up, ready for fresh..
20151103_173820.jpg

Cotton not too tight in the coil.
20151103_174746_1.jpg

Juice the cotton just enough to form, and lay the wick into the juice channels.

a bit more juice on the wick, and cap... (vaping .3Ω, 42 watts)

Hope this is of some assistance as you get your TFv4 dialed in.

@Stinkytofus and @Sm0keydaBear
Thanks for the tips. Just that i still have to get to see how i can vary the wick, getting the typical way of doing coil already took me a while.

@Wruff
I went through those pictures. I think my wicking is almost same, may be its the juice? But i have tried varied number of juices, all seem to yield the same result.

I am almost at the edge of giving up on this tank :(

Or could it be a faulty RBA?

I thought the same too, but more wraps never got me anywhere on this tank. I noticed even the pre-built coil that came with the tank had like 10 wraps. This is just one of my numerous trials to see what works for this tank. And yes, it guzzles on fluid like none other.

Still suspicious of your particular e-liquid line and you never did give us a Average Vape setting(watts)
Your builds looked decent and your RBA looks fine.

Vaping at to High a wattage will obviously cause premature burning. However, vaping at to low wattage setting will cook and gunk up e-liquid around the coil.

I have been trying a few liquids, most of them clear liquids. These are the settings right now 20 watts. 3.4V, 0.59 Ohms.

And i think i spoke too soon. I am still getting dry hits and burning my throat. I just opened up and checked on the wick, it does'nt look burnt much. This liquid was the one i had no problems with my kangertech; it is of the clear type. Just tried, opening the tank and then closing it back without doing anything- seem s a little better. Some airflow issue??

Well just FYI, if you don't give the tank suction when you puff on it, it's more difficult for the juice to flow. On my mechanical mod where I got the coil perfect, it requires me to puff on it to allow the juice to flow. Without puffing on it, I will get dry hits probably like you're experiencing. All vapers preference. IMO, you should be better off using the coils that came with the tank, because rebuilding takes a long time to get used to.

Dry Hits are a clear sign of over packing coil and or channels.

If your wicks look wet(Not Damp-WET) then you may have the coils over packed.

I work mine to slip comfortably, back and forth in the coil, just making decent contact - but not tight. Any coil pull is to tight.
Then I trim/fit for pickup.

I do not follow general wicking techniques. Rather than placing wicks into channels, I fill the deck above loosely with the wick.
Open channels allow maximum transfer however the full wicking on the deck prevents flooding. The loose contact wick allows smooth transfer through the coil banding.

I finally said the heck with all the tried and true methods that I could never mimic, went vertical coil (or slanted in the Mad Hatter) with a Don King on top and one down to where it's barely touching the bottom of the well. A Don King is cotton above the coil about a 1/4" and puffed out as fluffy as possible. I then just drip into the well itself and a couple on top. My wicks are lasting about 2 days before flavor changes no longer fully change and it takes about a minute per coil to make a new one. It's working with both cotton ball and sheet so far.
