400 euros per month ?

Fuuck !

Hehe!
We are better here in Greece. We are also paying because we dare to breathe. Groceries are triple the amount of EU and we have the lowest salaries.
Plus i lost my job on tuesday, i was getting 600 euros per month and i was lucky, others get 400.

Sitting down, facing forward.
WHY AM I NOT THERE NOW !?

Seriously, when I move to Cali to study, my life is going to get sooo much better.

My answer may be slightly on the high side since I live on the East Coast in the Boston-Washington magalopolis where wages, and prices, tend to be a little higher. If New Jersey has one virtue, it is the relatively low price of gasoline when compared to the rest of the Northeast.

Wow... You really studied ! Haha.

There is more to it, sure... Though I can't explain it that well.

We have extremely good healthcare... So, that's something...

But yeah, a 56% tax is absolutely ....ing ridiculous... But STILL... Cheaper than smoking !

There are many things I'm mad about... For example, my uncle goes to high school in Norway, and he gets paid for going to high school... The government pays kids to study ! He got a free laptop and gets 50.000 ISK per month ( 420$ )
Not that school is particularly expensive here or anything... But it just always seems as we are getting the most .... :p

Groceries are also more expensive...

Iceland is not thaaat cold :p We go down to about -10°C ( 14°F ) on our worst winterdays ( I went to Finland for a month this February and it was -25°C ( -13°F ) the first 3 weeks, THAT'S cold !

But our summers get pretty hot ! Like 25°C ( 77°C )

Also, we were the first country to have a female president... And the mayor of Reykjavík ( The Capital ) is the biggest comedian in Iceland who joined the election as a joke.

I am not proud, haha :p

But just out of curiosity, what is the average paycheck per month, before taxes in the US ?

It really depends on the state you are moving to. Some states have a higher cost of living but also they paycheck is reflective. Also if you work for the government (fed state local) or private enterprise. Experience is usually a big factor and of course what you are employed in. Take me for example. Say I make 80k a year in my chosen profession. I am an accountant. In my state that is the average for my education and years doing it. Now take that to California, say, and you are looking at 200k+. With that though my house at 250k here you would pay 500k or more in Cali. My brother moved out to Cali and was paying over 4 grand a month for a tiny one bedroom apartment. I had a nice 2 bedroom fireplace for under 700. This was 20 years ago though.

So it really all depends on a multitude of things. Each state has a minimum wage but it can't be less than the fed. California I think is 8 bucks an hour.. The fed is 7.50. Unless you receive tips then it can be less.

To put all that into ISK I think 1 dollar equal 120 ISK. A typical workweek is 40 hours here which = 2080 hours per year. Divide that by 12 and you are looking 173 hours per month @ 8 bucks per hour = 1,384 per month (bt). 1,384 *120 exchange rate = 166,080 ISK? Is that right? Looks like a lot. I must be missing something.

Ha! Jut the name Iceland sends chills at me. Even though I love the cold weather.. My wife likes it hot. Politics is touchy here in the states. I'll leave that alone. You did mention a comedian though? :)

Anyway I just find it amazing the different cultures of the world. 77 hot? Oh geesh we pushed up 98 degrees on Wednesday. I took the day off work and the family and I went to Kings Island (amusement park). The kids whined about how hot is was. Best thing though the line for the Diamondback was only 10 minutes long. Wait till you hit Cali.. depending on where you may be in a scorcher.

Disneyland is in Orange County, which is where you said you were going. But it is a big county, so temps kinda depends how close to the coast you are. Most places around here have been in the high 90s to low 100s this week, but will be coming down to the high to mid 80s in the next few days.

Usually July-August there will be a couple weeks where it gets to 100s. But on average it would be in 80-90. Winters are mild, and it would be consider really cold if it was only 45 during the day (brrr). Generally 50s-60s.

Of course the desert areas run a tad hotter, and the coastal cities a tad cooler.

You forgot to factor in all the "hidden" taxes that everyone, Iceland and everywhere else, also pay. Like the tax on fuel used to transport food, or the tax on fuel for your own vehicle, or liquor taxes not to mention the myriad of other State and local taxes which vary State to State and Town to Town. I do have a good laugh at the "occupiers", considering those facts, it seems like they don't have a clue.

I think the title "thread" is a misnomer, it should be "conversation" because they all seem to evolve since they are, indeed, conversations.

You're going to be in southern Cali pay will be any where from minimum wage (8.25) an hour to way high depending on what you will do for work. I live in central Ca my pay is 1180.00 before taxes every 2 weeks. I get paid to care for my now disabled son prior to his accident i made 25.00 an hour. Jobs are not so easy to find in Ca right now.

166.080 ISK per month is below the lowest pay you can legally get.

It's usually around 200.000... On a good month where I used to work prior to getting fired ( import-export company ) I was hauling in 320.000 Per month ( that was with a LOT of extra shifts )

When I go to college, I won't be working... I was just interested, since groceries and stuff is really cheap over there... I also find all this e-cig equipment to be very cheap ( one of the few benefits of being used to the bad :p ) But that answered a lot of questions ! Thank you =D

Sure thing.. That is of course at 8 bucks an hour minimum wage. Wonder why you all have a tax rate for under ISK200,000 per month.

BTW - Good luck in Cali mate.
