We agree on everything except the definition of the word liberal:

Liberalism (n): An ideology supporting the liberal use of legislation in the attempt to solve social and economic problems, i.e. government subsidy, overregulation, excise taxation, and prohibition.

Here's the definition of liberalism I prefer (from the Britannica Concise Encyclopedia):
Liberalism: Political and economic doctrine that emphasizes the rights and freedoms of the individual and the need to limit the powers of government.
And from thefreedictionary.com:
Liberal (adj):
a. Not limited to or by established, traditional, orthodox, or authoritarian attitudes, views, or dogmas; free from bigotry.
b.
Favoring proposals for reform, open to new ideas for progress, and tolerant of the ideas and behavior of others; broad-minded.
c. Of, relating to, or characteristic of liberalism.
d. Liberal Of, designating, or characteristic of a political party founded on or associated with principles of social and political liberalism, especially in Great Britain, Canada, and the United States.
Both parties have been guilty of insanely liberal use of law in recent years. This is part of the reason I am not affiliated with either party.

On this, I completely agree with you and am also not affiliated with any political party. That was the point I was trying to make. You just said it better. :)

I like your definition better too, but I'm afraid isn't the one usually applied in political science. Part d in the second is the closest. I just put it a little more bluntly. Your first definition and parts a through c of the second are almost synonymous with open-mindedness and generousity, which is more applicable in business-related and social interactions than in government, I'm afraid. Many of the ideals expressed by this sort of liberalism have been perverted by liberal government in order to excert more control over our day-to-day lives. The government's reaction to ecigs is an example of this. They'll wrench these possibly life-saving devices out of our hands while trying to convince us they're doing it for our own good. Some of us will even buy it.

I find something to help me quit and someone wants to take it away.Want to talk about dangerous?Ever seen a chantix commercial?Like a minute and a half of nothing but side effects and dangers. That got the big stamp of approval.I took that crap for about 7weeks.Yes I did cut way back on my smoking, but I knew I would go back because I could not stand the meds. That and my face got bitten off by a bear just about every damn time I went to sleep. My buddy took it to quit snuff, said his crazy dreams were Woody Harrelson coming by his work telling everyone they used to get high together. If you want a mind trip, take some freakin FDA approved Chantix.

Chantix is made by Pfizer the number one ranking pharmacuetical company in the world making billions of dollars with publicly traded shares on the stock market.
I looked up the side effects of Chantix 8-o.
No wonder they have approval, they can buy approval.:grr:
