I got my 18 YO for Father's day when I was 56 Wife and kids all pitched in for it. I don't drink much and still have some. I splurge and get a bottle of 12 YO about every 12 to 18 months as needed. lol

Almost the same. Usually that very special occasion is my birthday, haha... but that is a present for myself. Then there is the birtday of my ex-brother-in-law, whom I try to give the treat, if I can at that moment.

now if that Craptastic plastic bottle laying on its side didn't seal well in that not even close to air tight pencil box......
And science is correct that Alcohol will evaporate at room temps(well below boiling point).......
Bayblab: Evaporation Rates of Ethanol Solutions

hmmm........

Yes, alcohol will evaporate at temps well below the boiling point - much the same as any other liquid. The lower the temp the longer the time. The higher the temps the shorter the time. It is also quite possible that your bottle leaked and spread the surface area of the vodka to a much larger area then the bottle opening thus speeding up the evaporation process. It is also possible that the vodka in your case was soaked up by other material near by.

In order to remove an alcohol taste, one must:
a) Mask the taste with another flavor
b) REMOVE the ALCOHOL
Orange juice and Ice worked well for me:pop:

Ethanol generally is tasteless. Airing is a process in which Methanol is evaporated off immediately following the distilling process in a craft distillery. Commercial distilleries store their product in barrels and "air" that way. This is why "older" liquor is more smooth and generally cost more than younger liquor.

Pure alcohol should have no taste that has to be masked however. There will be a "bite" or a "burn" but generally no taste with out being flavored in some way.

I wouldn't ever give a non scotch drinker something like that for their firs time. Most have to have it two or three times before they start to appreciate it. I guess there are a few that like first time out of the gate.
It was at a British pub that I used to frequent in Sunnyvale, CA called the Duke of Edinburgh. The place is very popular with the British expats in Silicon Valley. My friend Rob and I used to frequent the place a lot. One night we were chatting with the bartender about scotches, how to tell a good one from a bad one, single malts, etc. The bartender poured us both a shot of Macallan 25 and Laphroaig (don't remember how old that one was) and asked us if we could tell the difference in taste. The Macallan was sooooo smooth. The Laphroaig tasted like drinking gasoline.
