smoktech tanks, not compatible with precise plus?

hey everyone.
i just got my precise plus today (wee!). i spent the better part of the morning in anticipation while the batteries charged. i attached a smoktech dcc lr tank, my go-to for the past while, and it wouldn't fire. i attached just a regular smoktech lr dcc xl to it, it was beautiful.
when i attach a tank to the pv there is no air flow. when it is attached to one of my ego 1100 mah batts the draw is rather airy. is the recessed well too much for it?
has anyone got these working on their precise? i'm really stoked at the performance, but i would really love to use my tanks.

I can tell u what worked 4 me, and it is a lot shorter than using a 510 adapter. I found these cool little circuit board spacers that are literally the size of a 510 insulator, but it gives u the clearance u need to make a connection and get air flow. I've only seen them sold at 1 place and I hope David doesn't mind me posting this, but madvapes sells them and they work perfectly for tanks and dual coils, which is what I think they were made 4. They are like 89 cents and they work great for both my 340 and 650.

Hope this helps

Yes, the smoketech tanks don't fit due to a larger then necessary metal flange (which blocks airflow) on the bottom of the cartomizer which is designed to keep the tank from sliding down too far. Problem is, it doesn't need to be near as wide as they made it to accomplish its purpose. I brought it to Smoketech's attention, but in one ear and out the other....

You can use a 510 to 510 adapter to life up off, or like blake28 above suggested. Most all other brand tanks work though.

Didn't somebody suggest nipping off the flange with a fingernail clipper or something?

Yes, someone did say they did that. They said the flange was pretty soft and they just clipped a bit off it on each side, they didn't even need to clip the whole thing off.

Tanks on a Precise+? If you must, not me..... Takes away from the clean lines and compactness of a Precise........

The flange is just nickel plated brass so it's pretty easy to notch or cut. I used a triangle swiss file and notched it in a few seconds. Problem is that the flange counter sinks in to the bottom of the smoktech tanks which negates the whole thing anyways. If you flip the tank over and use the non counter sunk end with the notched flange you can get them to work.

Any chance of getting a run of top caps with airflow grooves/channels milled in? I'd be good for at least one p16 cap. :)

thanks for the replies everyone. :) i kind of flipped out that day and made an order just for a few 510 adapters. it seems kind of redundant to add an extra part as middleman considering all the thought that went into the design, but it'll definitely still kick the crap out of my ego. i'll try trimming the flanges, and hopefully that will help. one day i'll punch my own cartos, but then that'll also be when i get better (non-plastic) tanks.

Not sure what all the problems are people seem to have with tanks on the P+...I run a BDV Who's Your Daddy stainless steel tank on my P+ 18650 and have zero problems. I buy the unflanged XL cartos from BDV also, and they work like a charm. You can adjust the draw by how tightly you fit the tank against the Precise.

Also on aesthetics, my BDV tank is the same size as my P+, so I think it looks nice on there.

Just my 2 cents, take it for what it's worth. :D

I've used "Smoketech Tanks" <-- I'm assuming you just mean the cheap plastic tanks with the clear window and plastic ends, from various sources, including lowest common denominator stuff like branded materials from Volcano just because there was a kiosk near me (it's just a Smoketech tank with branding, as a "LavaTank"), with no problems.

The problem is using the pre-punched or "dotted" Smoketech cartos with the bottom flange. Just use the regular cartos and punch them yourself, it's very easy and you can make adjustments on the size, number, and position of holes you want to put in the carto based on the thickness (VG) of the juice you're vaping.

Smoketech tanks are not exactly awesome, but they work, and it's an okay walking around tank. If I break it or smash it somehow, I'm not really gonna lose any sleep over destroying or losing a $10 tank.

If you want to move up to a better tank for your P+, I'd suggest taking a look at VPX, BDV, or some of the stuff that Siam is doing, but it's all basically the same thing: what a tank needs to do is fit snugly on your carto and not leak. With the higher end tanks you can replace the O rings, with the Smoketech's, I just toss 'em in the trash when they get loose, it's not even worth the bother.

Any tank will work with the Precise, you just need to adjust for airflow at the bottom. To my knowledge only VPX makes "airflow" tanks, with a notch cut in the bottom ring so you can fit it snugly. Can't imagine the hassle of dripping while I'm walking around, tanks work really well when paired with a precise in my opinion and either single coil Smoketech 1.5-1.7Ω cartos, or the Boge 2.0Ω.

update: i trimmed the flanges of a carto with a pair of heavy duty clipper things (i'm not a tool afficianado, and only have a pretty basic toolkit my parents set me up with when i moved out), and i trimmed the flanges until they were pretty minimal sized. there appears to be a vast improvement in air flow, but try as i might i still could not get a hit. if i had a smaller pair of clipper things then i'm sure i could have trimmed the flanges to be pretty much nonexistant, but i definitely would need a different tool.
i bought the tanks as an intro to tanks, as i was pretty unsure about them despite all the raving found on ecf. i finally understand why they're so esteemed. at $8/tank, it wouldn't exactly hurt me if they broke or if i didn't end up liking them. however one day i'm definitely investing in a tank where i don't have to worry about plastic byproduct exchange in my liquid due to the heat. i've got my eye on a few phiniac designs.

Are you not getting a hit because of lack of airflow now or because of lack of electric contact? Just want to clarify.
There are times when I wish I could get back into tanks, particularly with all the fantastic photos of these beautiful ones. Maybe someday they'll perfect a carto that doesn't taste like bellybutton lint.

Tanks look awesome. I grudgingly use them for out and about and the convenience factor. I really don't care for cartos. Dripping on the go just isn't safe, especially in the car, and I'm a chronic over dripper anyway.

Hopefully this will change soon, once Odysseus short mode parts come back in stock and I get my Zenesis atomizers.

take the edge of a metal nail file and notch the bottom of the tank, this creates an airway that is necessary when you have a tank that sits flat on the P+.

no special tools needed, a metal nail file will do , as long as it has a rough edge it can be done. A knife would work too, but you may cut into more than just the tank
doesnt even have to be deep, just a 1/16" groove is enough.

I'm assuming that you have the tank with black delrin ends.

notice in the pic, the tank on the right has large air channels on the bottom to make air passages.

i just notched a few slots but i couldn't get it to fire, trying once after every notch was made until i reached four. i compared the contact threads on both the propriety and smoktech xl lr dcc i've been using previous to the tanks, and the latter has a longer threading. i fired the modded propriety carto on the precise, and it would not even heat up. i'm guessing that lack of a electric connection is probably likely.
everyone has been exceedingly helpful in this troubleshooting venture! thank you.

btw, i'm just gonna thrown in my two cents. i think cartos taste awesome, and reach their full efficiency/capability in a tank. :p don't get the whole bellybutton lint taste thing.

There is one juice that did in cartos for me. I love iVape.net's Butterbrew. I put it in a tank one time and it just freaking ruined it. I was good with tanks up til then, never went back afterwards. Tried, but that was always in the back of my mind.

Tanks-Tanks-Tanks.......... Has the Vaping world gone mad? Direct Driping is still the best...... That is until David at SuperT releases his version/with a rebuildable atomizer... :)
