Among the seriously depraved and wretched anti-heroes that sometimes took the comics world by storm, my favorites were Milk & Cheese. Not just because they were dairy products gone bad, but because they were hilarious, and hilariously violent.

Just a side note, the film Mystery Men (mentioned by ValkyrieCT) was based on characters from the original Flaming Carrot Comics series; they were The Carrot's cohorts in crime fighting, and were eventually spun off into their own miniseries. It was a wonderful film, and one that actually choked me up a bit since I felt like Bob Burden (the creator) was finally seeing some of the success he deserved (Flaming Carrot was a hit with critics but never really reached a wide audience). Also, I thought Tom Waits' portrayal of Dr. Heller was *amazing*, and totally spot-on to the original character in the comics. One of my favorites!

My next favorite superhero is Promethea. Alan Moore spins an incredibly detailed story around this mythological character who inhabits different people throughout history, and weaves the superhero elements with classical magic and occult themes. The art in these books is remarkably, breathtakingly beautiful and rich. Besides Watchmen, this is one of the things in my collection I most frequently offer to loan out to friends since it's such quality work.

GAS this is for you

Thank you for that, Val. My fondness for Tom Waits' music began around the same time as my reawakening to comic books, so his appearance in the Mystery Men movie held an extra special appeal and meaning for me.

For my next superhero, I'd like to share my absolute favorite character of all: Paul Chadwick's award-winning and incomparable Concrete. Like my other entries, Concrete is an atypical superhero. No capes or tights, and the action is sparse. The stories instead focus on a man, Ron Lithgow, who is trapped inside an alien body. His new body is very strong and resilient, while at the same time providing some surprising and difficult limitations. It is one of the most thoughtful and carefully crafted comics ever created, and the art is exquisite. The stories are filled with deeply human insights, as well as an irresistable and pervasive reverence for nature. There is nothing else like it.
