Greetings ECF!

I picked up a SMPL close from AMOD recently, and I really like it. So much so that I'm planning to find an authentic. Not to get into a debate about authentics vs. clones, does anybody use one when out and about? The lack of a lock ring has me somewhat nervous about pocketing it. The idea of an incredibly hot mod/exploding 18650 in my pants pocket sounds not fun. How do you carry one? I'm thinking it just stays in my hand when I'm out walking, and I find a place to set it down when I get where I'm going, but would appreciate hearing how other people get around with their SMPL's or other mods with out lock rings.

Thanks,
caboog78

I own several flush or countersunk button mech mods (some with and some without lock-rings, which I never use), and carry them all in pants, shirt or jacket pocket... but they are the only thing in pocket - no loose change, keys or anything else that can depress the button.

Thanks, I was afraid that was the only answer. Guess I need to stock up on shirts with pockets and some cargo shorts for the summer. Cooler weather I can move things to jacket pockets, but once it hits 70 I lose pocket options

Or get a Stingray X, even with normal top cap it outperforms the SMPL in terms of voltage drop, looks prettier and has a good locking ring.

How much difference is there in voltage drop? Also, there are a ton of stingray X clones out there, which one do you recommend, or are you referring to the authentic?

To be clear, though, I have other devices that have some form of a lock to them, I'm just looking for feedback and options from others who own SMPL mods. I like the way the SMPL fits my hand, I like the button, and I like the performance as it is. As for aesthetics, well, let's just say beauty is in the ey of the beholder and leave it at that :)

Voltage drop is not the end-all-be-all data, there are a ton of other factors coming in to play including the variations of how each mod was tested. With the same atomizer on it my authentic copper SMPL tests better than my SXK Stingray X clone but not by enough to be a noticeable difference during use.

As far as carrying mods with no lock ring, I've become quite accustomed to it as my five daily use mods in rotation all have no locking ring and a recessed button. Haven't used this in a while, but if I plan on pocketing a mod for a while(hours at a time) I used to put it in one of these miniature formed bottom flashlight carriers(Mini Stinger Flashlight Holder - Tact Squad ). Fits in the pocket about the same as a mod/atty does but the bottom cannot be depressed while in the case, you can line it with felt too for ultimate protection.

Honestly now I've become so accustomed to it that when I want to pocket the recessed button mods I'll vape it completely dry so the wicks and top cap have very very little to almost no retained juice in it then I'll put it in my pocket with the drip tip pointing DOWN and the button pointing up. For me, If you vape it pretty close to a dry hit you'll not have anything leak into your pocket during this time. Even so, I always carry a few napkins if needed.

I had a Cigreen clone, and I currently have a Kepler clone, both are excellent. The copper inner with an stainless steel exterior is to me a really good design choice. Copper providing great conductivity, and SS outside to avoid continual cleaning and smelly blackened hands. I also think the floating 510 pin on the SX great. Those two part screw adjusters are impractical, and the issues with hybrid style top caps outweigh the benefits in my opinion. Both the SX clones I have owned had sticky crunchy buttons, but thats relatively easy to fix. I plan on doing a photo tutorial soon once.

The recessed button is good on the SMPL, but even recessed buttons can be accidentally fired.

For comparison with the testing I have done so far:

At a 0.33 ohm load ~
Stingray X - 0.39 volts dropped with standard top cap. 0.36 volts dropped with hybrid style top cap
Copper SMPL - 0.42 volts dropped

I have come to realize like Froth said that, unless the mod is REALLY inefficient or you are into competition vaping, voltage drop isn't really that important.

I understand your concern, and like you I leave nothing to chance when carrying a loaded pipe bomb in my pocket. I also won't settle for any inferior mech just because it does have a lock ring.

Pick up some of these 7/8" vinyl caps, stick a quarter in it, and you're done.

Froth and duc916: Thanks! This is the kind of thing I was looking for. I was thinking perhaps an end cap existed that I just hadn't come across, but I may never have thought off the flashlight holder.

sonicbomb: Thanks for the info. I'll probably end up getting a stingray x at some point, especially if I can find one with out the normal logo on it. I keep seeing them for sale and they seem pretty popular on the forums, but I will be looking in to the switch crunchiness before hand to see what I'm getting myself in to. I have a pair of nemesis clones that also have less than stellar switches, which is why I want to carry the SMPL more often
