From 25feb14:

Just feeling a bit panty-twisted... we went out to eat with six other people this past Saturday. TWO of them spent the entire time with their faces buried in their :censored:ing iPhones... one of them relentlessly TRYING to get Siri to work for him. It was completely annoying and rude and unacceptably anti-social. Just :censored:ing TYPE IT IN instead of repeating yourself over and over and over to a piece of software. My GOD!!!

...only LAST night, I called one of them out on it, no punches pulled.

That phone was NOT turned off or out-of hand for about 25 at the restaurant dinner table minutes when I just snapped.

I started innocuously TRYING to cast a hint... asking how long batteries last... you know sincerely interested. "Oh... it can last 8 or more hours". So I then asked how many hours it had been on so far... "Oh... a couple since last charge". So then I said there was no way it would die anytime soon??? "No... still says full charge." So that's when I let loose. (There were two others at the table doing the same thing with THEIR phones.)

It's a good thing Hus was not there (he was home, beat from spending the day at his Mom's fixing things and running errands for her) because he can be even MORE caustic than me given the right circumstance. And seeing how my target is one of his long-ago exes, he'd have really jumped on the chance.

I've really had it with tech at the restaurant table ... it is NOT acceptable.

And it mattered not that the dinner was a combo 3-birthday / 1-retirement gathering (with one of the birthdays being mine).

And now time to get outdoors... calling for right around 80 today... and a day off for "my fellas". It's looking like they have at least 3 more days. Sigh.

Good morning, Bear

So, did they turn the phones off?

Happy AM, galsszzzses.

My "main target" did. For the rest of the evening. The other two did, in time. But one just kept "checking in" every 5-10 minutes for the rest of the evening.

I don't know... should I feel sympathy and pity for an "addict"??? Do I (or "we") just ignore the person like THEY are IGNORING us???

The one that "kept checking" is part of a smaller group we get together with more frequently during good weather. I'm pretty much of the mind to exclude him from any future invitations. Do I just cut him off???... or do I explain that if he is at OUR house eating at OUR dinner table (or outdoor deck table) any tech is to remain OFF at all times? I dunno... which is ruder??? I am at a loss now as to what MORE I can say.

Ok, so I need your help. I have jury duty tomorrow. While i don't think that they tend to pick highly edjamacated opinionated wimmen for juries here, i'd like your best thoughts on making sure that they don't want someone like me as a juror.

If you know anything about the case, think of something small to say that provides just a HINT of prejudice. Not NECESSARILY racial/ethnic... but maybe past experience with (insert crime/offense here). For example: My parents were in fact the victims of three robberies at their home (one of them involved the car stolen RIGHT OUT OF THE GARAGE). I was called in for jury duty and actually made it to the point of selection questioning. I said, "How do I know he is not one of the ones that violated my parents?" I was out, free, in minutes.

Good Sunday morning Snails :)

:bday: Bear!

Bear, I don't think you'll be able to have all of your friends put the phone down...it's just reality. I'm with you on the selfishness and rudeness points, but some people just don't understand and/or don't care. You might have to decide if you want to spend time with the friends/acquaintances who refuse to leave the smart phone alone....

CES, if you're serving in criminal court, tell them that you believe everything the police have to say when going through voir dire. Civil court is trickier since that is more variable in participants and subject matter :D

Thanks for the ideas. In the Miami criminal court i made it clear (truthfully) that i didn't trust lawyers, and that i thought they would twist things to make their case.

oh, and i missed the Birthday amidst the rant.

Happy Birthday Bear!

Re: Birthday ---
That's a bit early, but THANK YOU!!! :)

Does he get "cut off" without explanation?... or do we lay ground rules and let HIM decide if he can abide them? I'm thinking the latter.

We canNOT just deal with it any more.

...and if my pounce on the other guy did not get the point across... but then again it was not within OUR walls. I really am of the mind we get to call the shots once foot is stepped across the threshold.

You can also act INCREDIBLY inconvenienced and annoyed and intruded-upon the whole time you're waiting. They do keep an eye on the pool... just act like you do NOT want to be there at ALL. If there are windows, keep looking out. Keep looking at your watch. Check you phone incessantly. Appear irritated.

What I got from the "continual phone rant" thing is.....

Bear spends a lot of time with HB's ex's.

ONE "ex". It's 25 years past for Hus and "ex". And about 22 years past for any experience(s) I happened to share with that "ex" myself. So, we have BOTH "been there", so to speak... just another thing we had in common from the beginning! :D

:D :D :D

ETA:
Is that TMI???

too early for bear's birthday, isn't it? may rings a bell for me but then again it might crs :D

Nope!... not May! That would be too late. I'm a relatively "early Taurus".

If you are at all into astrology:
... 1956
... 20h23 birth
... 43.1656° N, 77.6114° W
... and my Moon and Sun are in PERFECT 180-degree opposition... EXACTLY 180 degrees, 0 minutes, 0 seconds... which explains a LOT of things.

You can reverse-engineer the date from those hints.
