Well, just forget it Tibs.

Delaying all the time....just makes it worse if there's a problem. Every time you do more stuff on the computer it overwrites what would otherwise be recoverable sectors IF there was a problem. So putting it off makes hard drive file recovery mostly futile.

Tibs, that's scary too. :facepalm: Buying a new computer, that is. We are all PC people here--only one DD is a Mac girl. They are all fine, really. :D And they all have their shortcomings. :D

but the lifeguard data assistant from wd reports no problems on the hd

That's a good thing. However, it's not a filesystem integrity check. It doesn't know about the file system (NTFS or Fat32 or whatever). It's using SMART data for sector failure (bad writes and stuff). So that's good that it says no problems. But it's not everything.

chkdsk probably won't fix your problem. But it's the 1st step before you do more. ;)
