That's an "old" custom that has pretty much died out. Most owners are more than glad to accept a tip. Salons too. Here's a link.
Ultimately if they don't make enough, they just up the rates anyway.

This past Spring, I gave the landscaping workers (the same two doing the current job) a couple GCs each to fast-ish lunch places. They gave me looks like I sprouted a 3rd head. I'm wondering if THAT is out of the norm?... or maybe the looks were because of the amount. Whatever... doing it again.
