Thanks for all of the suggestions

restarting the router didn't fix it, but i can connect to the wireless with my iPAD, at the same time my laptop is dropping the connection (with the iPad and computer right next to each other). And the router is brand new, so that suggests its the laptop.

I checked the drivers using "device manager" but have no idea where to find wireless power settings. Power/signal strength seems most likely. I have deselected the option that gives the wireless adapter permission to drop out to save power.

I don't have a usable desk or table in the room where the router has to be, so moving closer or using the eithernet connection isn't a great option. Makes the laptop close to useless for work.

I can check the atheros sites and see if there are new drivers or different option. problems with the network adapter does seem to be a known issue with win 8.1 (grrr) from what I've seen on microsoft forums. but no one has a good fix that I've seen so far. One fix was to switch to the atheros adapter. sigh. I guess i'll keep checking.

Tibs, if the adapter completely fails then i might try one from walmart- but i hope to get it fixed rather than to have to buy something.

Hope everyone is having a decent day....time for me to nap :)

People have (seriously!) had luck with the aluminum foil trick.
How to Increase Your Wi-Fi Signal Strength with an Aluminium foil

this is also a test to see if it's a signal strength problem or not. ;)

Also, just rearranging stuff in rooms sometimes helps. lol. Think about what is "casting shadows". Reflecting off doors sometimes works too. Then there's wifi extenders, but you have to drop some $$$ on em. They work.

No other magic from me in this case unless I'm hands-on.

I'm downloading the drivers and will try updating them- just in case the drivers i have in place are corrupted somehow. I'm not quite up to uninstalling then reinstalling- but that might be the next step. If it gets that far, I'll have the drivers downloaded before uninstalling the adapter (one set of directions said to uninstall the adapter, then download the drivers  ) .

The location I'm in worked perfectly until about 2 months ago. It started to get flaky and then my router did go out. So, new router may have less power, or both started messing up at the same time.

thanks for the suggestions :)
