Co-ops are "OK" if they buy in big enough quantities to warrant price breaks on parts.
If I buy parts from digikey or mouser or whomever, I can get em fairly cheap. Custom modules are a bit different, as are custom enclosures.

true, but some parts are available only in packages of 25 or 100 and some projects require stuff from 10 to 12 vendors. most of the time there is a minimum shipping charge of 5 bucks - you do the math
