WHY are they digging such a deep trench for the wall block foundation?!?! They went off to lunch, so I went out to measure... 18 inches!!!???!!!

I know there will be sand added in... and then some gravel... but this is a LOT deeper than the work in the Spring. Those poor guys. You'd think the company would have some kind of powered machinery to help with that. They're out there with shovels and a wheelbarrow. It's going to be hell when they get near the Locust and pine tree... roots galore. :( I feel SO badly for them. Good thing it's only 56 degrees. "BRRR", by the way.

And then people ask why *I* couldn't do this myself!!! Yeah, right. It's going to be worth every penny of the cost.

How high is the wall?

Basically the foundation has to be deep enough to bury a block or two depending on the blocks. Also, the wall should be porous to allow water to flow though it and not build up.

And like you said, it needs sand, compacting, and gravel, and compacting. And possibly tiebacks or other things to tie it into the earth so it doesn't bulge forward. Inclining it back on an angle toward the hill helps too.

How high is the wall?

The work in the Spring shows, mostly, about 1/2 wall block at the base, then 2-3 courses on top. This job will be one block higher... two blocks higher for about 15 feet. Now, I'm not sure if there is an ENTIRE course hidden beneath grade. Regardless... I know Spring's trenches were not 18"... no way.

BTW... this isn't retaining wall... it's to create (replace) raised planting areas around the foundation. Extending the area out another 20" or so for more "annual" room and changing 90-degree angles to softer rounded bends. The 12x8 mid-yard raised garden turning into 14' diameter circle as well.

But, it's still all manual labour... or should I say "Manuel" labour... and I would THINK there could be an easier way via machinery.

They should bring a backhoe in or trencher of some kind. Yeah.

Not against the house, right?

Nope... except for the driveway, one walkway to front door and short walkway to garage "pedestrian" door, there are foundation plantings ALL the way around the house. And plantings all the way around the deck if you count that as part of the "house"... except for one deck exit onto the patio area created in the Spring (pavers). So all the work in 2013, this past Spring, and now was to replace the wood walls and make the raised areas roomier. Less lawn. :) When this is done, it's DONE... finis! Until the deck needs to be demolished and re-built... it was added in 1988.
