Lombardi has been saying week after week that he believes Detroit is close to a break
through. But we're 11 weeks into the season and well beyond the point where you can chalk this up to a slow start. This is just a bad offense at this point, and it's hard to paint Lombardi as anything but a disappointment.
Lucky for the Lions, they still have a No. 1-rated defense. They've rode that thing to the top of the NFC North, and should be competitive in every game they play because of it.
But Detroit's hopes of winning the division could hinge on whether there is an offense to complement it.
"It's just the way it is. It's difficult, it's tough," Caldwell said. "But the thing about it is, everything we set out to do, in terms of the season, is still in front of us. It's not like we got knocked out of contention or anything of that nature.
"But still, you got to face the brutal, honest facts. You didn't play well. And so we got to get that straightened away."
