So, only one set of drivers is installed.

I downloaded a new set yesterday. And i know where the downloaded files are saved. I don't know where the original drivers are saved, though i could probably find them (eventually) if i have to.

When i went to reinstall the drivers, two sets/choices showed up in the dialogue box. There was no freaking information about which set was new. There were both listed as being the appropriate drives for my adapter, one from microsoft and one from atheros. Since i downloaded the new drivers from the atheros website, that's the set i installed. I figured if i was wrong, i'd reinstall the other set.

(I'm kinda at the bleeding edge of my computer skills)

maybe it was the parabolic aluminum foil placed at the proper spacing so it focused the RF energy on the antenna that helped.........

I didn't actually try that...I'm saving my tinfoil for hats. I keep needing them when i think about vaping and politics. ;)

Well, you can always try the other set.

With WiFi problems like that, my 1st suspicion is signal problems. Hence the tin foil club post. Also the rearrange stuff post. And the move close post.

WiFi is notorious for being messed with by outsiders too. Hackers. But you'd have to check router logs (IDK if you can).

Then there's computer and driver and protocol problems.

Then there's hardware issues.

Wires just work. That's why I run wires. But like I said, that's me.
I suppose that's not fair either. It's not all wine and roses that way either. Ran a wire for GF. Worked. She swapped the wire out. Also her kid messed with the router. So now her slingbox that I got her Christmas before last won't work anymore and she hasn't allocated time to fix it. IDK what that deal is either. Was working when I left........

Can you just move the laptop closer temporarily and see if it "goes away"?

patience, grasshopper! ;)

new windows installation was completed yesterday - but more work to be done inside

Great. How did they manage to time window installations during the coldest spell you've probably had in decades?

Laughing WITH you Tibs. WITH you....

It's only happened once since i reinstalled, and that could have been a signal glitch.

I'm 90% sure that I'm using the proper drivers, and I'm 75% sure i know which driver to delete from the system 32 file (yep, i found it/them). But if i need to do anything further, i'll move the laptop all the way to my desk at work, so that i can use the highspeed wires there, and still have a connection (and assistance) if i screw something up.

I have things set up in the locations that i want them to be set up- and moving stuff around to accommodate a crappy modem is an absolute last resort.
