Great. How did they manage to time window installations during the coldest spell you've probably had in decades?

Laughing WITH you Tibs. WITH you....

remember lost's favorite saying? ;)

but ............ yesterday's high was in the 40s so not too bad for installing!

It's only happened once since i reinstalled, and that could have been a signal glitch.

I'm 90% sure that I'm using the proper drivers, and I'm 75% sure i know which driver to delete from the system 32 file (yep, i found it/them). But if i need to do anything further, i'll move the laptop all the way to my desk at work, so that i can use the highspeed wires there, and still have a connection (and assistance) if i screw something up.

I have things set up in the locations that i want them to be set up- and moving stuff around to accommodate a crappy modem is an absolute last resort.

Can't ya just try it for a 1/2 hour? It's a freaking laptop after all! (this assumes you can reprodce the problem though, so you know if it goes away.)
I'm not talking about permanent move. Just a "testing a hypothesis" thing. You know, diagnostics. Problem domain restriction and determination. Stuff like that there.

Of course i can. If/when it falls off again i'll move it to test whether it's the signal.

But, the the signal is strong enough for my ipad in every room, and for the wireless TV in the bedroom that is further away from the router than the laptop is. And if it's the signal, the fix is moving stuff around to accommodate. I use my laptop as a desktop, with a keyboard and mouse and a table for papers and stuff. So I don't like a fix that might require moving my work area. I'd rather play with the drivers ;)

Yeah.
Have fun with it. :)

I'm just building a mental decision tree. So the 1st split is....Is it a signal strength issue? A) Yes, B) No.
A = do other stuff than mess with drivers, B = mess with drivers.

But that's my decision tree, not yours. There's a lot of ways to mess with this stuff. So have fun with it. :)

I am so hoping that i'm done having fun with it. ;)

My decision tree provisionally ruled out signal strength, since i have confirmation of signal with other electronics. Reinstalling the drivers has almost completely eliminated the issue (it'd have fallen off 10-15 times by now, vs the once since i reinstalled). But i will concede that remaining problems may well be due to fluctuations in the signal.

Thanks for helping me think it through.

Housework calls. blech.

Another thought on power levels CES,
1) BIOS settings for the laptop
2) Windows power settings

You'd think the drivers would communicate with the OS about all this stuff, but who knows?
IDK what you changed already, if it was in the driver software, or the above.

Also, diff devices have diff power levels and abilities and antenna shapes, orientation* of device matters, etc. so you don't have apples to apples when comparing devices.
* orientation: The laptop's own case can cause problems if the router antenna is directly "through" the case.
Out of it now. ;)

I think the windows power setting are ok, i checked them. Not touching the bios settings. That's above my grade level. But my connection has been stable since the single glitch this morning, and i've been doing quite a bit of online work for classes next week. Fingers crossed.

Glad you got there safely, Pepper. Be nice to those waitresses.

Meeting a friend for a late pizza lunch in a bit.
