Take him/her in Bear!
The wiki said there's a vaccine that's partially effective against one or the other
Vaccines for FeLV are available (ATCvet code QI06AA01 and various combination vaccines), though no currently available vaccine offers 100% protection from the virus.
Feline leukemia virus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

(Tibs, they are viral infections, one is a feline leukemia the other is and immunological virus. Neither very treatable, but the cat MAY fend it off.)

Oreo is a good name!

IDK why you bother with the deck stain, but to each their own. Don't stain the cat... ;)

Looking up FIV...FeLV...
One moment please....please stand by....

FIV is basically "kitty HIV".

FeLV is basically leukemia.

The former: Once the cat has it, there really is no treatment. BUT, other cats can be vaccinated AGAINST contracting it. Our "Gizmo" (RIP 10jun12) had it due to a knock-down fight with an infected cat. So, Ty-Grr and T'mato were getting vaccinated until he passed on.

The latter: It's something that can take a cat quickly, OR just be an ongoing condition. But it will be what takes that cat under "natural" circumstances, eventually.

Getting the deck stained helps hide all the age cracks. It just looks better. That deck was built in '88. What needs to be done is having all the railings (the horizontal pieces) replaced. I tried one piece, but the screws just break off/out. I wanted to do it myself, but don't want to bother with having to extract well over 150 broken screws. I'll have it done professionally. Because I can.

what about having it done at a regular vet?

The vet office I have used since 1979 does the same thing... and I get to pay full-price for the privilege of possibly having him./her killed. (Thinking about it, if it is a "her", she should be swelling with kittens at any time now. But no sign of that... yet.)

it's a dilemma, bear! but numbers aren't all that bad - 8 to 10% of outdoor cats are infected (i'm hoping ferals were included in that) so oreo's chances are fairly good ....

But, we're still hoping he'll "come around" and become more people-friendly. Despite husbear's "no more cats" stance (grrr to that, by the way), he seems open to taking in Oreo if the cat decides to walk over the threshhold. Right now, it just bolts back under the deck at the sight of an outdoor human (pic was taken through a window using telephoto lens).

And I'll follow in others' footsteps and get going on domestic chores.

... meanwhile, in-between laundry washing, drying, folding and putting-away cycles ...

I'm still puzzling over "horrible names" and "vulgar". I suppose I could - and should - take my puzzling elsewhere.

So, that will be all on that topic. Bear's Honor. (*)

Good. I'm already "in trouble" elsewhere since you "brought it here". ;)
Thanks Bear! ;)

(don't take that seriously. Totally predictable. Besides, the other thread is closed. Now they're commenting in the middle of a different thread. I guess by your quote that you've seen it. Best to keep it out of snails, IMO).

As to the "vulgar" and "horrible names" thing....it's just the usual inflammatory exaggerations.

I am curious, are there any 'no kill' shelters in your area?
Perhaps if 'Oreo' tests positive for one or the other--(both) a shelter will take him (her) so that he has a chance of adoption by someone who takes care of special needs kitties, or can live out the rest of his (her) days unadopted, but living among others who are in the same boat.
Just asking because what you are doing is awesome, but I understand the need to worry about other animals in the area.
Would hate to see an animal 'put down' just for being sick if there is a place that will take him (her)....
We have a lot of the type of shelters I am talking about, in my area, and some folks don't know they exist.
Just wanting to put it out there.

One item from my "vacation"...

We had a steady stream of feral cats taking refuge under the deck this past brutal Winter. All came and went, except one. He/she (LOL!) has been here since December. We've been calling "it" Oreo, which is gender-neutral. Anyway, I am in a bit if a dilemma... I want to do what is right, but I also do NOT want to be a :censored:heel.

The cat SHOULD be trapped, neutered/spayed, blood-tested and brought back. However, if the blood tests are positive for FeLV or FIV, the cat will be put down.

I understand the implications of NOT having it tested (danger to other cats' health, including one of ours that roams the property). But I also do not want to be the cause of that cat's untimely death. Cats are quite able to live long lives even if they have FeLV or FIV... we've had those as pets in the past.

So... I am in a bit of a spot on this. I cannot decide what to do.

This is him/her. As is evident as well, the bi-annual deck staining is in order and has been arranged:

apparently, by ny state law, any cat that carries the virus has to be put down :(

not sure if that's really so but bear's info is usually correct

Hello JIC and TY for the reply...

I am not sure a no-kill shelter would take a feral which shows ZERO signs of wanting to be the least bit social. "Taming" a feral is a long, long process. And in the meantime, it can reproduce and spread conditions to other cats. So, TNR at a feral clinic (or even my vet) is just about the only option other than just letting it be. I am more than willing to have him become a pet -OR- allowing him to just stick around the property. If hanging around is what it wants, I'll just need to be SURE to arrange a more comfortable area before next Winter. The relentless snow this past Winter made it almost impossible for me to remove lattice and crawl under the deck to provide a quick makeshift "house".

So, I remain undecided what to do. Trapping would be pretty easy as there is currently only one small way out from under the deck... just set the trap against the opening. It's what possibly happens after that. It's amazing how we (myself and hus) have become attached to a cat we can only admire from afar. It had adopted our house as its own... I'd like to do the same in return. I was hugely concerned about it during this past winter... and amazed at how resourceful it was to defeat the elements.

I'm only going by what I've been told. The vet, and three feral clinics all said the same thing. Law?... I don't know. But it seems standard procedure. I'd just have to ask (or look it up in the intertubes), I suppose, and then deal with its condition if they will GUARANTEE it comes back to me after "fixing".
