The one I use is over 10 years old and has never had a starting problem. Hmmmmm....
Change air filter. Fuel filter. Have DH help if you need to, but it's in the book. Also don't leave gas in it for too long without using some stabil gas stabilizer.
Check oil level too.

that's exactly it - it wasn't properly winterized and still, it did start for me last week

You know there's a choke on it right? You pull the little handle out when you start it, and push it in when it starts....right? I assume so, just checking.....
