I wonder if the size of an image could be used as a filter somehow...? Emoticons are pretty small byte-wise.

Most of that stuff should be cached on YOUR side. Once your browser has seen a pic, it shouldn't have to reload it.
Have you checked your cache options and made sure they aren't messed up?

working with retired now - not sure why it's not caching. i increased my cache to 500 MB from 350 MB. on his advice i changed the half-life from 6hrs to 24hrs
