They're both meese studies. They're extrapolating the results to peeps. I skimmed the paper quickly and didn't see any mention of how the dose they gave the meese related to the amounts of the substances in the fruits. It may be that you'd have to eat stoopid high amounts of the fruits to get the effects. The researchers are also in the process of patenting the chemicals....which suggests they're hoping to be able to sell it... which further suggests that even if it works in peeps we'd have to eat bushels of apples to prevent muscle wasting....

But eat an apple a day, and some green 'maters, anyway. cause neither of those things will hurt ;)

(no surprise that that the news headlines extrapolated even further than the study did)

yup! that's what happened ;)

''According to the researchers, apple peels and green tomatoes help prevent muscle aging and decay in elderly. The researchers from the University of Iowa said that if taken regularly for over a period of two months, the elderly population can actually witness the difference made by the consumption of apple peel and green tomatoes.''

assuming that it's an elderly population of mice....

I haven't read the paper in detail, so i have no idea of they back up the claim that it's effective in people. But they saw results after giving the mice the substances for two months. Mice age much faster in two months than people do. 6 months is full grown for a mouse and 22 months is quite elderly. So, start now, cause it could take several years (and i hope that you get the eat the whole apple, not just the peel)

If ursolic acid- and tomatidine-based approaches are found to be safe and effective in humans, they could possibly be used alone, together, or in combination with physical therapy and other nutritional and pharmaceutical approaches.

this is what the patent applications are likely for. Any extrapolations to peeps are speculative.
