Oh. Well you said AC too. So that's ...uh...more power than you think (fridge + furnace + ac + couple lights + water pump if needed)

You wouldn't need both the furnace and a/c, right? I would want one that took care of fridge, furnace/AC, one tv and puter!!!

If it's forced-air, yes you do. The furnace fan (and controller computer) run it. Then there's a separate compressor for cooling the air (the thing outside). So it's both...it's just that with AC you use electricity to cool the air, and with heat you use something (LP) to heat the air...furnace runs either way to circulate the air.

I have a small generator. Hot water tank is electric, so is dryer. Both those go OFF if I'm on generator. But I still get cold water from the well pump. Furnace, fridge, well, a few lights and 'puter.

And have gas for stove (nat gas is new, used to be LP and $$$$$$...so ele water heater and dryer was OK. Next might be gas.).

I do not know. This is ALL "his" thing if he so desires.

The surfeit of facepalms was for... power out (it's happened before)...
calling in to work (why???)... having to get a generator of any size,
shape or capacity TODAY (again, why?). I just do not "get" the whole
    thing.

He went in for a half day.

    Geeze [tm FranC].
