i think i better stop reading the news for a bit - the story is now being carried by national papers and i don't think my nephew will ever forgive himself trying to do things by the book and walking away on friday: " just one day before the incident, a court order to temporarily remove the child from the home was issued, however, the order was not executed due to an apparent issue with the paperwork."

Your nephew must be completely devastated. The whole family, really.
Family disputes, escalation, maybe mental illness or desperation...all can get nasty as we've seen.
So tragic.
Hopefully they can get her some help. I think he should get some crisis counseling too. The danger here is that HE doesn't get the help he needs, Tibs. She will be evaluated by the court system as part of the process, but he...could fall through the cracks. Suggest you make sure he gets some help if you can. Your brother-in-law's family too.
