Try buying a domain name once. Wait until you need a secure certificate added onto that.
A LONG time ago, domain names were free. Secured site certificates take some research, so I can see a nominal charge. But it can cost 100's now, even with "USA in control". Now, there's cheaper ways, and more expensive ways, too. I think the "base costs" are pretty low, but there's value-add services that do stuff too.
All this stuff has SOME costs associated with it, because there's servers and people behind it all.
