Carpal tunnel syndrome, thumb tendinitis, and more can result from a bad grip. Most people have one of three mouse grip styles, and don't know which is theirs. ... Over time, she says, this leads to muscular discomfort—known popularly as “mouse shoulder”—as well as stress on the forearm and elbow.Jul 12, 2018

Could be, MM. Repetitive strain can do a lot. Mouse button pressing too (like index fingers for clicks).
Switch fingers. Flip mod around, press with index finger for a few days.

Could be arthritis too. Does it feel like it's in the joint, or the tendon? The types of pain (joint vs tendon) feel slightly different.

Where the thumb and wrist meet. So kind of learning towards repetitive motion. I've switched fingers by reverse how I hold the mod in that my index finger presses the button it helps and also trying to use the other hand. I got the pain to easy up though it different is still there. I notice pain increases when my thumb is 45 degrees to my hand and that's the position when I press the button on the mod. Keeping it aligned with the other fingers helps.

Did not think of arthritis, its a thought but I don't think that is it.

I blame it on the lingering after-effects from when I took a swig
of this stuff back in the 60s.
