But the Great lakes "buffer" temps this time of year (the water is still warm relative to the air) and they also tend to dump lake-effect snow (warm water warms the air and it picks up moisture until it goes over colder-land and then the fine snow falls out, usually at the shoreline but sometimes quite a ways away).
