But yet... when he calls to get an "OK" to stop 5 days in advance
of a dental cleaning, they give him the thumbs-up. So... <???>.

Now time for *MY* appointment... then to hospital to see what's
going on there. Later!!!
I'd trust the heart-doctor, and question the dentist. Besides, different procedures. The one your dad had is one hole in one vein. Like a "big infra-venious shot".

It also means if it was an oversight, I am vindicated.

ANYBODY on blood thinners is ALWAYS advised to go off them several days before an invasive procedure. It doesn't matter what they are being used for. The danger of bleeding out is a high risk while on blood thinners.

Meh. He got a nice safe overnight stay and watch. And for an 86 yo with CHF, not a bad thing. Sounds like they are trying to keep him alive, so IDK that I'd be all that upset about it. But :2c:

well, a $500 co-payment if the stay could have been avoided is something to fuss about ;)

I believe you should question ALL doctors, if you are unsure. They are human and make mistakes, too. Let me tell you about a very close friend of mine. She had breast cancer, had her breast removed, developed infection that wouldn't go away. Surgeon finally decided to take both breasts to keep infection from spreading. She was given a script for pre op blood work, took it to her PCP, who signed off on it, WITHOUT doing the blood work. She went into surgery, had other breast removed, never felt better, went to new doctors who tested her and found the cancer had spread. She died a few months later. Had the pre op testing been done, they would not have done the surgery and maybe caught the cancer sooner. This happened over a period of about 8 months. She never felt right after the very first surgery. She was 43.

The anti-platelet medications aspirin and Plavix are VERY IMPORTANT to take after having a stent placed in one of the heart arteries. These medications are commonly called blood thinners but are actually anti-platelet meds which mean they also prevent blood clots from forming by preventing platelets (which are a type of blood cell) from clumping together - which is the intial process of a blood clot. I agree completely with your cardiologist - this is the healthcare provider who should be making the decision when it is okay to temporary stop the "blood thinners" before surgery. It takes time for the metal on the heart stent to grow tissue over it, so the metal is exposed to the blood and that is why you need the anti-platelet or "blood thinning" medications. If you were to stop the medications too early, before the tissue is covering the metal of the stent - blood clots can form. These blood clots could totally block off the blood vessel in the heart and lead to a heart attack.
Stop Blood Thinners for Surgery: How Safe is it?

(They were possibly going to place a stent in Bear's dad if they needed to)
So blood thinners for that process is NORMAL.

My GF had a stent placed in a leg and she was on plavix for 6 months or something.

Yes, but this article refers to stents already in place. When you stop blood thinners, they are prepared to jump in with heparin, if need be. Even in the article you linked, there are mixed answers, with the most logical one being bridging with heparin. :)

    Like I said, different procedure.

Yes, different procedure, same possible result. They don't just put a shot into the groin, they make a small incision, which bleeds, which is why Bear's dad bled so much. He was one of the lucky ones, imho. I've been down that road, Atty. Honestly, it's not that simple, and I believe Bear's dad was very lucky that they were able to stop the bleeding. :)
