thanks for all the feedback.

As i do my research I'm finding that I'm looking for data to support the non-surgical route. so, my bias is clear. It'd be different if she could bear no weight on the leg, but i think I'd still lean towards conservative. When i asked my vet what were the possible consequences of not having surgery, the only thing he identified was arthritis within a few years. i have seen that there is better evidence for the non-surgical route in smaller dogs.

(anecdotal evidence among people i know is 50% that surgery worked great (n=3), and 50% that non-surgery (n=3) worked great)

Stay tuned and thanks for all the support :)

Happy birthday Maddie :)

I think it's a good bias, CES. Puggers could put NO weight on her leg and I went conservative and all was well. The arthritis will occur either way, but putting her on a supplement geared towards joints will go a long way to helping her, if not preventing arthritis.

    Maddy says thanks!!!

I would be curious as to when this article was written. There is substantial evidence now regarding bracing, even larger dogs. The brace gives them the stability (they have adjustable rods in them), while allowing scar tissue to grow, or undergoing therapy. It also helps when you simply CAN'T keep your dog quiet for long periods of time, OR crate them most of the day. To me, that's cruel if it is used to keep the animal from moving around.

the top one is from last January. The bottom one has no date, but there isn't much published data, and i could find no head-to-head comparisons between surgery and orthotics. It does look like PT without orthotics isn't very helpful. Looks like worst case is that if i go the orthotics route and Monroe still ends up need surgery, i can use the orthotics during her recovery.

One of the reasons that i want to avoid surgery is that i'm not confident of my ability to keep her quiet...or prevent her from getting on the couch and bed. I'd have to crate her while i was at work. and though she is crate trained, she wouldn't understand the need to leave her there all day.

That was one of my main reasons, too. That, and putting her under for a difficult surgery and recovery. It sounds to me like yours has a minor tear that will probably do well with a brace. The fact that she can put weight on it is really a good sign. But I would get going on some sort of support to stabilize it....:)

being fixed is always good! :D woohoo for that frannie! ;)

ces, as far as i remember there are no major cons trying braces first. i'm sure you'll find what's best for monroe! (((hugs))) i'll check with the boy, the latest by monday, to confirm roscoe, their hound, had a torn acl. they tried braces first but then had to go the surgical route after all :(

Speaking of dogs, today is Maddy's second birthday.....:)
    She's just an angel:

    Happy Birthday to Maddy!

    We're fixed:)
We're not even all set up yet.LOL.
    Yay!

@CES, I trust you to make an intelligent decision on this. Sounds like a potential win either way. :)

Plus (Fran can relate) I just spent hours untarping and unloading the contents of a travel trailer (GF's)...IN THE RAIN (Rain started just when we did. But the pool brushing and chemical adding came first before that, because it's getting bad due to all the rain and weird hot weather).

And then, when we got done and back to her place, we hear about the tornado in the next county heading our way.

So I skip the rest of the errands I had planned (but got gas on the way home) went home and turned on the news. Watched it come in. The tornado went SE of us.

So, my luck held. It was a weird one, not super-strong but real sustained (unusual for MI, more like what they see in the plains states. MI they are often intense but short-lived.)

    So...
Got pool chem stuff and water tested.
    Treated pool. While:
Running back and forth, in a downpour, to the storage area for trailer untarping and unloading. (did it in 2 trips).
    Got gas.
Got home and evaded a tornado.

Now: low winds and light clouds. Getting brighter out. We tried to get AHEAD of the storm.
Sometimes you just have to let stuff blow over.

    Oh...Hi snails. :)
