G'mornin, snails...

Went to visit my uncle (88yo) in the hospital last night. He "tapped" the side of his head on the water spout in the shower after bending over to pick up the bar of soap he'd dropped...he didn't think anything of it. Walking in the garage to get in the car, he felt dizzy and lost vision, so he sat down until he felt better and could see again. Of course, he didn't tell anyone about it until a couple of days later. :-x

Emergency surgery over the weekend to drain a subdural hematoma. He's got 6 staples and a suture or two on the left side of his mellon. No berating from me...I'm sure he's gotten enough from my cousins and his grandchildren.

Thankfully, all's well.

morning, people. they turned on my internet early today, but obviously too late for this early gang.:)

Sup, Pepper...

yeah, you can't really say that either of us are "relatively" early when compared to the time when the majority of the snails first pop in for the day.

And another Wednesday has arrived. Hope everybody here has a good one!

..........

A few things to vent about, but I'll spread them out over a few days. :)

How many of you here have a physician that CHARGES FOR DOING REFERRALS?

At my Dad's last physical, we walked out with a referral to a radiology place
for an ultrasound. Did not think anything of it until a bill showed up for $15
(from the physician) with not much explanation.

I called to find out what it was all about. I was told that he charges for orders
for bloodwork or referrals for xrays/ultrasounds/other WHEN THEY COME DURING
AN ANNUAL PHYSICAL
(which has $0 cop-pay) (and which are now called "wellness
exams" ). If those things come during a regular office visit (non-free, with
co-pay), then there is NO charge.

You have *GOT* to be kidding!!! I went from "zero-to-witch" in 0.2 seconds.

So a FREE THING now becomes NOT FREE.

So then I called his insurance company. I was told that practice has become
VERY commonplace. It's rather sporadic for non-Medicare patients, but fairly
widespread for those over 65. And it has nothing to do with insurers... they
are totally out of the loop. It's physician-specific and $ stays in the practice.

You have *GOT* to be kidding me!!!

Well, Dad's next appointment (a regular check-up) is the 27th. "WE" (aka ME)
will be having a chat with the doc about this.

Grrr.

Anybody here have the same thing??? (My guess is "no".)

good.

that's typical of men, especially men born before 1950. my pop had a bleeding ulcer about 25 years ago--at the time he didn't know he had a bleeding ulcer, it was blood in his stool over a period of days. he told no one about it because he didn't want to be a bother or worry anyone.:-x it wasn't until he lost so much blood he could no longer get out of bed and we had to call an ambulance. he almost died. he turns 81 tomorrow and has gotten much better over the years.:)

morning,mad.

morning, bear. same to you.

my physician does not charge for referrals. she's awesome. I have a online service that allows me to contact her and ask questions or get a prescription written--also with no charge. however, I do pay a small yearly fee for the online service.

Dad figured he will pay that $15 plus the next visit co-pay next Wednesday. I told
him he will do the co-pay thing, but I am not done investigating this... yet. They
can just carry it over as "balance due".

To speak with anybody at the AMA (I just checked out the website), it's a toll call.
I want to ask THEM about this practice. Time to fire up the flip-phone... for
"free" long distance.

See... most people would just pay the $15 and be done with it. But, this is no
ordinary housewife they are dealing with. :)

THAT is reasonable and expected. To answer your questions requires
HER time. I get it. Referrals have ALWAYS ALWAYS been free, and
it was the receptionist who completed the actual referral (date, time).

Not that HER time is unimportant, although she reminds me of "Miss
Wiggins" from the Carol Burnett Show. Nail file going, chomping gum.

Just the first 10 seconds...
