Happy Monday to all thread residents.

..........

Spectrum Cable TV (Charter Communications) raised their LOWEST-tier
channel service from 54.99 to 76.99, a 40% increase. That's what
my Dad has. He also has a 4-service premium movie package (which
did NOT increase). Net net, after additional taxes and fees and crap,
his bill went from 119.86 to 143.01, up 19.3%.

In years passed, I took care of his cable bill as part of his Christmas
gift. But for the past couple of years, he insisted on giving me the $
to cover it (but I still get the bill).

I think I have talked him into giving up the movie package since he has
harped time and time again how it's all the same stuff over and over.

But he also wants to try over-the-air-only channels for a bit and find out
if he would be happy with just those. (Can't do a roof antenna...
apartment and all... plus, they do not allow dishes, so do not suggest
becoming a "new customer" to DISH or DirectTV.)

See what big companies do to fixed-income seniors who really don't
have much in life??? They price 'em right out of the water.

Oh... and Spectrum does NOT NOT NOT do any bargaining. I had luck
for a few years when it was still Time-Warner. But Spectrum only plays
"Hearts and Flowers" on a violin if you call to complain.

Netflix rates went up again.
OH NOES!!!! From $10 to $11???

They are leaving a LOT on the table. They KNOW people are scuttling their
dishes and cable. Actually, I'm surprised their fees are so low.

At some point, they will BECOME satellite- and cable-like with their rates.

Evolution.

It was 8 bucks a month when we first subscribed. We have cable, but we do like Netflix and both DDs like Netflix, too, so we keep renewing our subscription. IIRC, we started Netflix when the last BlockBuster in our neighborhood closed its doors. :D

Will YOU teach him how to use it, Tibs???

He presses wrong buttons on a REMOTE... then calls me.

ON/OFF

Volume UP/DOWN

Channels UP/DOWN

I should put masking tape over all the others. Or super-glue them.
you got a point ;) dh is so bad now that i set the sleep timer since, apparently, he can't find the off button anymore ...... sigh

I planned for today to be "Chantix Monday"... but I wimped out.

They sent 4 weeks "starter" and 4 weeks "continuation". $0.00

I told doc that any "very annoying" side effects means I will stop. He
    was cool with that.

The pharmacy (Tibs: Wegmans) called BEFORE they sent the stuff
and I had to talk with an actual pharmacist. Interesting that NO
monograph was sent, except a sheet that stated I had the conversation.
I would THINK that something would be sent, in writing. But doc did
give me a rather thick booklet with all kinds of info.

    Maybe tomorrow.

Why am I so scared?... I'll simply stop if it's too much.

OTA is easy, particularly if you try some old rabbit-ears first if you have some. They probably work as well as the supposed new-fangled "HD" antennas. I think HDTV is UHF (or is it VHF) but it's the old high-frequency range stuff. He has to have a new-type TV with a digital tuner though.

I dropped Netflix CD service last month. Was tired of having only 2 CD's per month worth watching (saw most everything already). Now they don't even have 2 new decent ones per month. They have "Netflix originals" instead. Netflix thinks it is Hollywood now. I guess some were well recieved. But still, screw them. If they won't spend money on delivering top-shelf content (or they are getting screwed by content owners) I'll either go without or find it somewhere else.

I'm about ready to drop their streaming too.

Bear, ask me about cord-cutting and other bundled services if your dad can get past the remote issues and have decent internet speed. But the remote thing...yeah...

    How old is he now?

    Interesting.
My Mom just got me a SodaStream Fizzi for $44.99+tax (today only, in store purchase). It's on sale for 59.99 (from 79.99) then there's a 15 dollars off 50-bucks-or-more coupon. So guess who drove her to the store so she could buy his Christmas present? ;)

But for those that have that coupon or access to it....it's a good deal. 15 off 50 is at most 30% off.

I'm giving up soda (mostly) for the new year. ;) :p
