Tibs and others, IDK if you can stream it or not, but there's an episode of "Adam Ruins Everything" called "sleep". In it, he discusses how it USED TO BE common for people to wake up in the middle of the night, get up for an hour-ish, and then go back to sleep and rest until they woke up naturally.
We changed our mindsets about sleeping, and due to the work-schedule (largely corporatist, industrial age driven) we started believing that sleeping for a full 8 hours is the "normal" thing and that if we don't something is somehow wrong. Then they sell more sleeping pills too! But really, not going back to sleep, or in the case of teens...not getting enough sleep and starting school too early (they used to start at 9:00) is causing a lot of problems.
So get up for an hour, then go back to sleep, and see if you can wake up naturally and not by an alarm.
Also avoid too much nic if you wake up, as it messes with your deep-sleep.
