Ugh. Dad's annual apartment rent increase notice went from 2 choices
(2 and 3 below) to 3. He's been there since 2005. Apparently, the lease
agreement has changed over time and they are trying to get everybody
on the SAME page.

1. Keep your current rent (no increase until May 2020) but sign a new
lease agreement.
2. Your current monthly rent will increase $20 and keep your original lease.
3. Move out by May 15, 2019

Of course, he sees "no increase" and wants to do #1. I do NOT like #1
because the wording has NO option of reading, reviewing or considering
what MIGHT be in the "new lease". ie: nickel-and-diming on things that
are now included, plus who knows what else.

So, as his advocate, I requested a copy of the new lease agreement... all
42 FREAKING pages of it. And, I'm no lawyer.

Right off the bat, it goes from a month-to-month lease to an annual
agreement. So... at 89... if he signs it and the next day goes into a home
or passes on, there will still be 12 month rent due. While that would give
ME plenty of time to empty the place out, it surely would not take 12
months. Unless I poke and dawdle.

Secondly, new tenants pay a monthly "animal fee". He has a cat. So, there
goes $x of his "no increase".

It also appears water will be billed separately. There goes more. I could be
wrong, the wording leaves a lot to the imagination

That's in only the first 4 or 5 pages.

Pay the +$20, Dad. There would have been an increase ANYWAY, Dad.

Sorry, Bear. But I'm glad you're going over it carefully. Also, I'm sure that acts of God or some such term (force majeure) will get you out of any contractual obligation. You may check with the landlord, anyway.

I'd GLADLY agree to 2 or 3 months clean-out time. I could probably
do it in a couple of weeks, but the place is NOT "close"by. All I would
want are old photos and important papers. EVERYTHING else free to
takers. I/we do not NEED anything else. (Oh, and cat, of course...
despite her patent HATRED of me.)

OK... this is getting morbid. Just had to vent.
