I made the decision last week that the deck work will be hired out to professionals
this Spring. Put out the first call, so they will be here Tuesday to scope it out.
I want ALL the wood to be power washed, then stained. I did specify brush/roller,
NO spraying of stain. And those floor nail heads (written about last Spring) will be
set flush. Two railing tops (handrails) replaced. All post finials... either replaced,
or simply removed w/ resulting holes filled in. They're nice to have, looks-wise,
but they serve no REAL purpose. (We always joke about them just providing extra
seating when needed. )
I don't like it when one of the first questions is: "Do you have a budget?" My answer
was "if the price is fair, I'll know it".
And I learned from the last time is to get things in writing, specifically a timeline for
completion. I can totally understand weather-related delays (late April, early May).
But if weeks and weeks go by with decent weather and NOTHING is being accomplished,
then I have to get cranky. And last time, fire them. Oh... and no "deposit" this time.
I plan to wait for the quote to come in before making a couple more calls. As I said,
I'll know if the price is fair. It's NONE too soon to be on someone's schedule for that
kind of work. I'm sure that it's actually too late for some of the contractors.
